Is Oblivion from 2006 more technologically advanced than Elden Ring?
Oblivion has:
- ultrawide support
- no fps drop, no screen freeze, runs buttery smooth
- keyboard and mouse support, you can actually click on the map with your mouse
- mods that won't get you banned
- journal and quest log
- cooler menu music
- open world, just as good if not better
- guilds, where are the covenants?
- radiant AI
- things actually different at night, npcs sleep for example
- most importantly horse armor

the list goes on.

updated:

Also Oblivion is made by Todd Howard. He was in a chess club.
Does Miyazaki even know how to play chess? Never confirmed.

Of course it runs buttery smooth, it's from 2006 and you would play it in 2022, which means it would be ran on a rig from a few years ago. Depends of course, but yeah

Yeah but Elden Ring won't run smoothly in this state even 10 years from now.
Stutters on 3090 too.

You assume tech wont improve, which it always does. Also ER came out last month? And it runs better than Cyberpunk. Granted most things run better than that game but still.

Elden Ring doesn't come close to Cyberpunks visuals yet has the same performance as Cyberpunk with RT on on my rig. So while it's far from being an ugly game it's visuals to performance ratio is currently horrid.

Oh, yes, radiant AI.
"Have you heard of the high elves?"
"Don't talk to me, Breton trash!"
"Goodbye!"
"Goodbye!"
Implying it;s any better in ER, there's handful of NPCs that give you a couple of lines and the rest is just enemy grunt 1, enemy grunt 2.

At least the lines make sense. Sometimes less is more.

Breath of the Wild on Nintendo's smartphone tier hardware is more advanced.
EASY PETE 12 MAR 2022 a las 3:29 a. m.
Lol what? If you unlocked the fps over 60 in oblivion the physics would go crazy
Pad.Trick 12 MAR 2022 a las 3:41 a. m.
I use the same line, i always get if i ask for linux support (just with adjusted numbers).

Quick Question.
Why should a company spend money on something like ultrawide support, that only around 2% of the userbase uses ?
simple answer: dont use stuff/settings which arent the standard.

Oblivion has no fps drops, no screen freezes, and runs buttery smooth... on modern systems, after dozens of updates.
That was not always the case.
It was honestly kind of a dumpster fire at launch.
Also it looks like trash.
A HEAVILY modded Oblivion can look *almost* as good as Elden Ring does, although that 100% does not count because modders have had a decade and a half to work on it, which is more time than any professional video game development team is ever going to be given.
And if you enable more than the bare minimum of distant LODs it absolutely does *not* run buttery smooth with no fps drops, even on top of the line modern equipment, lol.

The game engine works fine on ultrawide. The devs went out of their way to overlay black bars on top. There are a couple reddit threads talking about this, sometimes the game takes a little bit to load in the black bars so you get 30 seconds of flawless ultrawide. I had this myself the very first time I launched it too so I know it's legit. The game even continues to render whatever is under the black bars so you get lower fps at 3440x1440 than at 2560x1440 even though they look exactly the same in the end.

As a developer, why wouldn't you fully utilize the platform that you are developing for?
Especially if your fanbase is asking for that for 10 years.
And they are selling millions of copies. If only 10 people would buy their games on PC, I would agree with you, why waste their time and money. But Elden Ring on PC made like 200 million+ USD after tax alone.

It requires really low effort to support this resolution, the only thing they had to do is to anchor the UI elements, to scale with the aspect ratio.

FS isnt developing primary for PC
just FYI
maybe you need do some research first, before u will spread false claims

Bro, buildings in Oblivion don't even have functional windows.

Anyhow, Bethesda is a PC developer, Fromsoft is not. If you don't like how bad they are at PC ports then buy their games on console. It's a simple solution to a simple problem. It's not new.
Azorian 12 MAR 2022 a las 8:22 a. m.
Ill always love Oblivion and its world, and would still be playing it, if the leveling mechanics werent so extremely bad and unrewarding (a world that grows stronger than you over time is not my personal definition of motivating)...

From a gaming point of view, id absolutely say that its open world is superior to ER, though that doesnt answer the original question, i know...
