Regular sized greatswords. And no not because people crying how claymore is OP etc etc.
Regular size greatswords have actually good horse combat animations. stuff like the large club, not so much. As much as I love regular hammers, even power stancing a morning star + a mace doesn't seem to make PvE enemies flinch as much as one handing a plain old knight's greatsword (where did I even get that in the early game all the guides suggest later game enemies drop it)
A bastard sword style moveset may seem less efficient compared to "has a thrust on the strong". but 1 handed overhand, two handed horizontal, can be quite useful when dealing with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PvE enemy hitboxes. An overhand smash sword swing will not miss a rat, small dog, or crawling centipede priest baby by sailing over it's head uselessly. Or to go back to my DS1 experience, will not clearly stab smogh in the ♥♥♥♥ but the game declares it did not actually hit him.
Though with how trash investment to results in poise is in this game, taking advantage of heavy charged wide sweeps is a lot more tricky to do reliably. but it still feels good when you clean sweep multiple fodder with a weapon still shorter than ye old zweihander.
Go for it to see how you enjoy it, you can always go back to your bigger sword, or see how much you like smaller blunt weapons if you don't like it. At the very least enjoy the horseback attack animations while you can.
I'm a wishy washy bastard who keeps cycling between regular greatswords, blunt toys (Morning star, or boat anchor? hmm...) and a pike regular spear this run.
