Are the skulls with golden runes inside corpses of players?

I thought the same at first, but nobody agreed with me, so i'll leave it to the experts to figure out.

I don't think so.

They are rarely in places where a lot of blood puddles are, and just outside in the open world.
I think it's just a way to give some kind of low rune income to people who explore the map a lot.

They seem to never be anywhere near bloodstains anyways. gives you something to aim for while riding your horse between destinations too which is nice.

Ah. Never played offline, so that's good to know.

Guess they are just random spawns then.

I thought, they might be like the Vagrants in DS1, and show up if certain conditions happen.
Do they spawn in the same places every time?.

Actually you're wrong there, they are there in multiplayer as well but ONLY for the host.
No they are random and can be all over the place, had 2 near each other.
As well, just because you don't see blood doesn't mean they CAN'T be corpses....

i believe they are even distance based respawns, or time based. i found like 5 on the dragon island, then i finished the circle and saw a whole bunch of new ones again without resting

I'd say it's doubtful simply because you can find dozens without dying, the ratio to skulls with runes to player deaths, especially away from bosses, is just too impossibly large for that to work.

Too bad. It was an interesting theory, since fromsoft does add weird features like that sometimes.
