Against small attacks the difference of few points between Brass and the best heater doesn't matter either.
Barricade is okay for boosting stability, but it's real power is in turning strikes into deflects, opening mobs up to guard counters.
I believe it's the SECOND best medium shield
There's still two better shields than that, one of them even lighter. Though it has a different buff (attack power).
Most of your upgrade materials are going to be monopolized by your actual weapons anyway, and farming upgrade materials in this game gives me flashbacks to the Pure Blade Stone. Took me something like 3 hours to get two of a specific shard. I had around a dozen different rare drop gargoyle masks by the time I was done farming them. Once I got them, I was able to upgrade my sword like 4 or 5 times in a row all at once, since I already had all the shards necessary beyond those two lower leveled ones.
I'd say turtle is THE best medium shield no contest because of this. It's the grass crest shield from dark souls but cooler because it's in the shape of a dog shell.
Brass comes in next just due to the higher stamina block.
What disqualifies that shield for me is the fact that it looks hideous.
It could boost HP by 200 and I still wouldn't use it.
Pair it with something like the Gargoyle heads, the viking looking horns, and the serpent-god's curved sword (with the hawk or wolves as your spirit of choice) and you get a neat druid spirit animal theme.
To be fair, they dropped more from them than anything else that I had seen. I only needed 2. I am playing blind unless I get stuck. I was farming them in my game while also dropping my summon sign to help people through the dungeon, so I was helping people and farming the stones in their worlds as well as "souls" and "humanities" from clearing the boss in their worlds at the same time.
I would rarely finish even 1 run in my world before I got summoned.
For me shields are best.. almost all enemies bounce of attacks giving me window to hit. But bosses never bounce. greatshield is like really tanky and fun. I just havent found the weapon type or magic to use with it :(
