I tried out the Bastard's Stars and it's kinda meh, medium speed and range feels pretty short.

Moonveil is exponentially better for int based melee.

recently started using the Nightrider's flail and found it surprisingly good. Not quite Katana good, but I really like it, enough that I spent a lot of smithing stones upgrading it.

Only got one to deal with the crystal caves but it's working nicely as an all a rounder.

Humm, that flail is on the very start of the game, get trapped by the treasure chest in the lake with the dragon, get teleported to the mines, exit, go to the big sick dragon, kill it with bleading, and in 12min at the start you got 70k runes or 90k runes if you use a golden chiken feet :P

Anything with bleed is really good.

They pretty good but range wise, they fall kinda short based on personal experience

You are better off using standard club weapons. Flails really didn't get any love.

They're alright. They do ok stagger, have strike damage, and cause bleed. The strong attack on horseback is decent too. Just hold it down and bash things while it spins to stagger, do damage, and build bleed.

Night rider flail is good.

:( they really did them dirty

The classic Flail did me good as a reliable sidearm throughout the early to midgame of my playthrough. The damage is fair and it deals Strike damage, making it ideal for clearing out those crystal or stone miner caves where every enemy is made of hard rock.

Since it's a good sidearm, it might not be a bad idea to also infuse it with a Holy-type Ash of War so you can take it with you into skeleton-infested dungeons.

Bad range, good on horseback because heavy attack will swing it for multi-hits, bleed is always good.

Pretty mid overall but I've only really played with the generic flail

It's a "strike damage" weapon for dex characters. It's good against heavy armor, and rocky / brittle creatures; less effective than slash or pierce against anything else.

Flails may be okay in PvP, given they cannot be blocked, IIRC.

I didn't pvp much with them but I don't remember this being the case. Might be wrong. Big if true
