Storytelling is an option.
The reason you fight Rennala and the other great rune holders is cuz with the "war" to become Elden Lord. Everyone is at a stalemate cuz they don't want to invade other lands and risk defeat. I got that from a video dunno how correct that is but seems right. Could be for other reasons like example big man at Caelid Radahn can't really do much in his circumstance.
The Shattering I can't explain, it was a war is all I know, videos would probably explain better.
The reason you are on the path to become Elden Lord is cuz you were once exiled but however were given some of the golden hope thingy as well as many other Tarnished in order to break the stalemate and make progress in order to actually get the world moving on a new age. That's the most I'll explain without spoilers.
Also the reason we spared Rennala was she isn't really a threat. The moon sequence is a dream thing or some sort of spell but once we beat her she is useless. So she decides to hand over her rune probably for her own reasoning which I'll avoid also cuz spoilers.
I only got this info from a video feel free to correct if I made mistakes, I'd like to learn more.
All mechanics as lore behind
Basically this.
Dark Souls doesn't have good storytelling.
Doing many of the quests the story kinda explains itself pretty well for a from software game.
But if you rush through the game. Won't notice the talk to Melina prompt at certain graces... don't read and listen to all the stuff the npc say. Yeah there isnt much then.
It's a hell of a job doing all this without some sort of guide tho. Figuring out rannis quest for example is borderline impossible if you dont wanna waste a lot of time searching for something you dont even know exactly where or what it is. And thats one of the quests that can give you a lot of lore.
If you look for it, you can find lots of lore bits, but you are also free to skip all of it and just focus on bashing heads with a telephone pole.
he didnt write the story he just made the lore and world building. the rest is from miyazaki
I'd actually agree with both of these.
The story is there, the lore exists, it's just not conveyed in a manner that's synonymous with "good storytelling".
This is partly because of Miyazaki's childhood with books he couldn't completely understand tho.
