If you've been with the series for a while, you learn to recognize certain areas/setups as being suspect, and test them. It's not quite like it was with DOOM 93, where you'd be breaking the space bar on your keyboard testing every inch of every wall--there are environmental "tells" old hands know to look for.
The method isn't 100% accurate, but neither is believing every "hidden path ahead, therefore try attacking" message you come across.
Trial and error, really.
...mostly error.
Also on PC there are many software options like mesh viewer that let you see places you can go out of bounds or discover "removable" walls so even if trial and error doesn't work there is always an option to use additional software if you want to make a detailed guide, for example.
You can also take your chances with messages. If you see a bunch by a wall, take a swing at it and see what happens,
they can only spoil something that you're going to figure out 2 seconds later anyway.
But mostly it's through player messages from someone who found it. Nevermind the trolls who tell you there's a hidden wall everywhere.
No. I’m pretty slow. Lol. I was 60+ hours in before finding a illusionary wall. My first runs I just have to play, in any game. Took me about 12 hours to know how to level.
Or just smash/roll in to all walls
