the community is actually very nice and helpful if you just ask for help
That's not a good enough excuse. They have had 6, SIX ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games to fix this ♥♥♥♥! The summoning system has ALWAYS been bad, even as far back as Demon Souls. This game changes some of the features, using the item to summon a player is the only way to see gold signs of players, but the actual summoning system itself has NEVER changed! It's still localized, it's still tied to levels, there is a vaste pool of millions of players, but you're only allowed to access only 5-8 at a time!
Seriously, think about it! The major hard bosses, you turn the item on and except HUNDREDS of signs with hundreds of people being stuck, if not thousands. Instead you'll find... 3? 5? Maybe a 6th gold sign? wtf man. And every single one, already summoned by the hundreds of others that see them and try to get them summoned first.
The Multiplayer Passwords was an interesting idea at first, but it's TOO limited. It doesn't make 'Your Friends Sign takes Priority'. No, you can ONLY see your friend's sign, you can't see ANY other sign when using a multiplayer password. But worse yet, if you use the password, the summoning restrictions are mostly removed, so your lvl 1 friend can summon your lvl 200 self. But without a password to see all the summon signs, you are heavily restricted based on Level, and Weapon Level.
Which let's be real, the weapon level is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke. Since people can skip and miss content, some people, like the streamer Epic Name Bro or ENB, took almost NINE hours and 1/3rd of the map, before being able to upgrade any of his weapons cause he missed the 1 mine location that exists in the ENTIRE GAME which drops crafting stones.
So even if someone might be the same level as you, you might have unupgraded weapons, while they ran around to higher level areas and farmed +12 weapons for themselves. That right there creates another barrier of people not able to connect and be summoned.
And again, this is OPEN WORLD, meaning you can come to the content in ANY ORDER at ANY TIME, so some people might reach a hard content, too early, or too late, and not be able to summon people either. And it's not possible to know what level most of the people in an area are to complete that content, and even if someone is a higher level, doesn't mean they are good, overpowered, or able to win. higher leveled Pure Strength Builds will have a hard time compared to lower leveled int builds
The summoning system is NOT Balanced for Open World, and is a MASSIVE problem.
You need to summon from the summoning pools—not in front of boss doors. With early bosses, they're generous with this (the pool is right outside Margit's fight on the bridge). Later, they become less generous, and you need to go further out.
The pool system works great when lots of players are farther along. Because the game is so new, they may not be out there yet. I would like to see summoning pool unlocks be account wide since that would allow people doing low-level challenge runs to co-op with others.
