I am level 63 right now 32h into the game and only have the first 2 bells.
Smithing 1+2 and somber 1+2----
also you CAN farm the final upgrade stone atleast. its just not sold by a merchant in infinite amounts. but its a rare drop and you only need one per weapon thankfully. not sure about somber ancient stone yet. this is only for the regular.
some enemies also drop smithing stones. those stone imps can drop them and thier level depends on the area the imps are found in. the higher level the enemies are on the catacombos they are in the better the stone dropped. rate is not that great sadly.
for somber stones 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 farm miyazakis handfetisch monster. they drop them at a very common rate. 1 and 2 are sold infinite by the giant smith from the start. no need for farming em. but the upgrade system will see changes in a patch anyway. its busted currently and favors special upgrade arms too much. you only need 10 (different tiers) somber stones to fully max a special arm.
meanwhile you need 97 regular stones to max a regular arm. that is just plain stupid and unbalanced. ill assume theyll probaly reduce the regular ones to 1-2-3 per tier for 6 total per tier which cuts the whole number atleast in half. currently its stupid and costs way too much to max a regular arm. 12 per tier is just silly compared to somber weapons.
so no. upgrade stones arent limited at all. but the cost ratio between regular and special arms is off by a very large margin as you can see.
there is 4 fallingstar beasts. the one in the cave thankfully does not drop anything important as he is utter cancer to fight. worst dungeon boss by a long shot. room is just too small for him.
i am close to 120 hours in. still miss 1 bell. so your progress is normal :)
