Earlier from titles had this spell, and it was also bugged, in exactly the same way, but earlier from titles never had a weapon that caused curse (death), so it never became a huge deal.
When the madness meter is filled up, it deals an huge chunk of damage out of both your HP and FP. Basically, you must avoid that bar from filling up at much as possible and the only defense against it is Focus and you can only raise that resistance with the Mind Attribute.
