Crossbows don’t scale at all?
I understand the thought process, don’t get me wrong. The player aims and the crossbow does all the work leaving nothing for the characters attributes to affect.

But to have one singular weapon class in an rpg that doesn’t scale with any attribute seems like a huge flaw. What’s the incentive to use a crossbow over a bow? Smells like wasted potential to me

Its one handed and can be used with a shield.

there are some neat crossbows that do good damage on their own with the right type of bolt, so damage scaling isn't "really" necessary.

Crossbows are cool so I get your pain, but I think the design for it was to allow strength players to have some sort of ranged alternative, even if it's slow firing and does less damage than a dex character with a bow.

Not to mention what the above post pointed out, that's a big advantage over a bow

I think it's specifically because they don't scale. They do pretty decent damage for what they are, and if you didn't spec to use ranged weapons like a....hmm....I would say mage but also...they have pretty high dex in order to cast spells more quickly.

Dunno other than I've noticed I can't use my Longbow or giant bow while riding Torrent, but I can use a crossbow. Correction. I can use the Giant Bow as a straight up spear basically. But can't shoot for obvious reasons.

Been this way in all Darksouls games. (although IIRC in DS1 was a glitch with lighting bolts on crossbows).

Basically, it is a weapon for a character that does not invest into str/dex and focuses on something else. You can also fire two crossbows at the same time, or use them with a shield.

being one-handed allows crossbows to function as a side-arm, which is something a bow can't do

Ah that’s right, horse combat. I hadn’t even considered that bows may not be usable while riding a horse. That certainly does seem like a good reason for it, allowing horse projectiles without it being overpowered

I don't know abuot the giant bow, but you can definitely shoot bows while on horseback, you just can't aim anywhere but in front of you within a certain angle, just like spells. Only difference being some spells ahve good enough tracking to be used to attack someone behind you on horseback

They've always been that way, great damage that peters off a bit at higher levels. I'm rocking the Jar Cannon and it's hitting upwards of 900 damage at close range so it's far from not viable when coupled with the knockback. :2016bee:

You all have given me alot to think about, I came to the realization that crossbows don’t scale because I was planning a build focused on them. I guess I didn’t realize that they don’t scale in the other titles because I never really looked at them.

It’s disappointing that a crossbow can’t really be the sole damage output of a build, but it is nice to know that it can get effective use in tandem with other builds

I don't know about greatbows, but longbows can be used from horse back.

I use my crossbow on my vigor / endurance build. Low STR, low dex, etc. Works fantastic.
