How to upgrade spells/magic enchatns?

Let's say I have dragon breath spell.
Or magic enchant on weapon to scourge it on fire.
Is there a way to upgrade the spell, or should I upgrade the magic stuff/aritface and get intelligence etc?

you are about right
first upgrade your casting tool (all information is displayed in the item window)
second your neccessary casting skill(s) (again all information is displayed in the item window)
per se you cannot upgrade skills/spells themselfes

Spell upgrades are done via upgrading the casting tool and spell-relevant stats, it scales with.

You may find different versions of similar spells with varying amounts of damage, FP consumption and casting-speed, though, like Glintstone Shard and Swift Glintstone Shard.

get stronger spells by upgrading your casting tool, and increasing the stats that the tool uses for scaling (though obviously not the strength used for hitting things with it~)

if using dragon incantations, use 2 stone swords on the gargoyle fog gate at the first area of the game (right after the tutorlial dungeon) and kill one of the guys in there for the dragon chime. it boosts dragon incantations.

Spell efficacy scales off of the "Sorcery Scaling" or "Incant Scaling" stat you'll see on your catalyst item.
