My thoughts about the Sword of Night and Flame...
So recently I resorted to using this sword as a weapon in my heavy faith build. I had the golden halberd and winged scythe on me, but fot this first tun, I wanted to make a poster boy Paladin, with shield and straight sword. Unfortunately, every single decent sword in this game seems to scale off intelligence, thus leaving me with little options.

About the sword, I absolutely agree that the weapon art is disgusting strong. It can melt anything in its way with 0 effort. Which in itself is not a problem, since I can just NOT use the weapon art, and instead use my whole repertoire of spells, and use the sword only for melee attacks. That's where my problem lies. The normal attacks on the N&F seem...weak. Even for a straight sword (which is completely normal to hit less than bigger weapons), the damage seems mediocre at best. I was fighting a boss in coop a couple of minutes ago, and in a single swing, he did 4 times more damage than me. It made me think I could not have killed alone withouth spending 15 whole minutes in the fight.

So it is now crossing my mind that the value of this sword falls only and exclusively on the weapon art, and is mediocre by itself. Can anyone else who has used it share his thoughts? Or have any idea of how to complete my poster boy paladin Sword&Board with some other, let's say "competent" straight sword? I head about the Golden Epitaph, but looking at the stats and scaling, at least on paper, N&F "seemed" a better option, and since I see nobody say a thing about the Epitaph, I have no idea if the damage is up to par.

And yes, I know I have the Halberd, and the Winged Scythe, and some really good greatswords. I just wanted to be a fancy shining poster boy :(

damage absorption works a lot like ds3 which means split damage is largely terrible. the sword of night and flame splits three ways so has to go through 3 different defenses on an enemy. it's a strong weapon because of the weapon art and against low absorption enemies it will do a ton of damage but otherwise yeah, it will be like every other gimmick split damage weapon-- it will become less and less useful to you.

That's what I was thinking, and to be honest, while the weapon art is too good to be fair, it has little use as a sword itself. Any other idea to complement my build?

if you need alternative get the carian knight's sword its decent straight and if you want a sword that feels like a sword the weapon art turns it to 2h sword for a while from straight sword '10str ' 10dex '18 int are the requirements

That's a choice, but the sword scales with intelligence, and I'm a faith build, a Paladin. It kinda defeats the whole purpose. Does anyone know if Golden Epitaph is any good?

Coded Sword I think would provide exactly what you are looking for thematically and performance-wise

The sword is less powerful imo once you reach mid game. I've tested this myself by respec because I too am a paladin type build. The first answer is correct far as I know.

The one that only does sacred damage and nothing else? Does it deal decent damage? I'm really struggling right now.

What are you using now?

You could also just go with a lordsworn sword with sacred infusion.

That was, in fact, my very first weapon when I started in Limgrave. But it started to lose shine very quickly. Unfortunately, the scaling is pretty terrible.

Have you been to Haligtree yet there is a sword that is pretty much a faith version of carian knight sword. Seemed to have good stats and it's skill is projectile that applies self buff (holy i think).
Edit: it's called Miquellan knight's sword.

There's a sword called Golden Epitathe. Not quite sure where I found it, but it has innate D scaling into faith. Found in Auriza's Hero Grave, it'll be a minute before you reach it.

Yes, I heard of the Epitaph, but as stated in the post, as I hear nobody talk about it, I don't have any way to know if the damage is up to par.

Huh, I didn't hear anything of that one. Odd. I'll look into it. Is it good?
