Ground slam aoe?
When's the last time somebody died or broke their legs because a really heavy object fell next to them? Sure, they might lose their footing, but taking any sort of significant damage? Nah.

I mean a meteor might do it, but at that point you're going to get blown to pieces because of the actual shockwave/heatwave traveling through the air, not the ground lol

How come games (not just elden ring) overuse this system that is so flawed? xD

Not talking about gameplay, just conceptually.

i mean, as you said,m when the object is falling next to you with the force to create shockwaves of crack the ground, there is damage that comes from that to things next to it.
yeah the range that some of those slam aoes will dmg/stun you is ridiculous, im like 30 feet away and lose half my hp because a dude hit the ground with his shield? that is just dumb

But in reality there isn't xD it has to be something stupidly massive crashing down on the Earth with terrajoule energy to have that effect. A dude swinging a hammer around won't do it. Heck even a collapsing building won't do it. It'll just unbalance you a bit.

The dumbest thing is when this happens in dying light because a rhoided up zombie smashes a piece of rebar on the ground lol

in reality we dont have magic either, not sure what that argument is.

the ground slams in this game have impact force enough to create shockwaves and break ground, hence damage.

Well not talking specifically elden ring, just generally how a lot of games use this system.
And cracking the ground with a heavy object isn't that hard xD

because it is a way to provide aoe attacks to enemies to increase their diffculty so you can do more then circle strafe them to dodge.

I like the way the staff stone cat did it, it does the blue magic thingy on a ground slam. Makes sense why that hits you.

i mean thats just aoe but blue you realize, it not really different in any meaningful way besides color.

Yea, just saying I think that's a better way to do it instead of ground slams.

In dying light there's a zombie that's basically just roided up who smashes the ground with a piece of rebar, and the same thing happens, you take aoe damage lol

So yeah, I'm talking conceptually here, not just elden ring.

right, and i already explained why the brute has the aoe slam, so you cant circle strafe, you have to actually use your dodge action.

its a game, they're gonna give it mechanics, games use this mechanic cause they want to stop you from constantly standing next to enemies and just hitting away at them.

dying light also just gives you a dash where you jump 4 feet to the left/right and all attacks clip right through you cause of i-frames, its just game mechanics to make games actually interesting.

Because it's an impressive visual and an easy way to add AOE attacks to enemies without other obvious means of generating them.

In Elden Ring specifically, I think ground-level shockwaves are used so heavily because they're a very intuitive type of attack to dodge with the jump, and the designers wanted to use that new defensive feature to make bosses more complex.

Basically, it's a gameplay consideration more than a realism one, and I feel that it's completely acceptable when the game is already so far removed from a realistic setting. Like, the whole thing is magical. Nothing works in ER if you try to consider it from a purely physics-based perspective; the crayfish and crabs couldn't physically exist, the dragons should never be able to get airborne (or at least in the ways they do) with their body structures if you assume they're made of standard biological material, the horses shouldn't be able to walk let alone charge under the weight of their riders and armor...it's a different setting that has different effective laws of physics than our own.

The real question is: why tf are you looking for any form of realism here? you fight dragons, undead, giants and who knows what, your horse has horns and can ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ double jump, and theres all kinds of magic beeing flung around. but you get upset about a groundwave dealing damage? Seriously?
Just say "its magic" and move on....

Yes it stupid, but then again this is also a game where you can use weapons that are as big as your entire character.
As for how to avoid these attacks... try jumping.
