Anyone else feel disappointed by the intro movie?
I love the game and if they had to dedicate the resources to make the final game better, I'm 100% on board with that, but compared to the previous games and the very first teaser trailer, it was kind of a let down. It's just a bunch of 2D art, cool 2D art, but not as cool as what we saw in 2019.

I thought it was fine, and wasn't Demon's Souls the same?

I feel disappointed with the plot structure.

But then again I've always basically only played Soulsborne games for the gameplay, jamming together piles of nonsensical lore from item descriptions together has always bored the crap out of me.

Lol that was my initial reaction too. I'm pretty sure they just used the concept art for their intro, it doesn't bother me too much but it is kinda funny.

The intro is beautiful but I agree that I was expecting a cutscene. Also, I don't understand the beginning of the game when you start at the chapel. There is no tutorial, just a boss. I wish the intro cutscene would have lead directly to our character being found by Melina and Torrent.

It's sensical though
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed a questionable dip in quality in that area. I suspect that they were not satisfied (not sure why) with the below 3:55 video, which plays exactly like an FS game's opening cinematic.

I would have preferred the fantastic 3D animated video over the bland slideshow opening currently in the game. They could have used the narrator's voice on that video but for some reason, they chose the slideshow. Terrible choice imo.

i mean the point is to lose there and it sends you directly to the tutorial right after.

Well this point is useless then since you cannot not die. Even if you kill the boss, it is scripted that you have to die.

im unsure how that is useless if it does not show you the gameplay and still send you to the tutorial right after, it achieves its goal win or lose? while also being a fairly common staple of from games.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
I skipped all trailers and everything before playing the game so I didn't know the trailer, but that thing is epic.
Maybe thats the reason why they didn't put it into the game. It wouldn't have matched quality wise and they had to put way more work in their story to make it work.

It's lazy and lame. Why did FROM blow the budget on an e3 trailer and then short on the actual IN GAME trailer? WTF
I think they did ok. The game did get massive sales after all, no doubt in part because of that huge budget trailer.

Maybe. I still prefer the video over the slideshows because the slideshows don't look that good. The first few look great but as soon as the narrator starts naming the NPCs and showing them, you can see that the upscaled images don't look good on screen at all. It begins to feel incredibly cheap.

I wasn't disappointed by the intro, though the fact that it was a slideshow did standout to me as odd for this game's budget.

What was disappointing was the black screen you get when you die to that monster at the start of the game. THAT'S what I really can't believe no one is talking about! They just play some splashing sounds and then spawn you somewhere else. That's a scene that occurs in the first five minutes of the game, shouldn't it be extra-high priority to actually animate it? As a result, Elden Ring has by far the worst "first 15 minutes" of any Souls game so far:

Nothing in the chapel, small boss that you can't fight, black screen in place of a cutscene, empty cave, short (but informative) tutorial with no boss and no real action, and now explore these plains. Don't fight the cool guy on horseback, because you're not meant to win that either.

I was also disappointed by the black screen that occurs every time you rest at a bonfire. They didn't do that in previous games. They simply fogged the screen around your character, which was a lot more immersive. Here, they hide everything behind an ugly black screen.

It's a pity they downgraded it so much from the trailers, they probably did it so that the ps3 and x360 could run it, IMO they should have made it ps4+ to begin with.
