How much Vigor is good?
I feel like way too many things one-shot or two-shot me. I'm at 20 vigor, exploring the red area. Should I raise it way higher than that?

Caelid's a pretty high level zone, and you'll never really stop getting one-shot by mobs in this game, damage is kinda overtuned. But in general 40-50 is where you'll stop leveling vigor for most builds.

Yes, ultimately you want your Vigor to be 40 anyway. After that you start getting significantly less HP for each level. Caelid is also a difficult area compared to Limgrave and Liurnia. They expect you to be a pretty high level around that part.

Your vigor is way too low for Caelid. 40-50, minimum. Even then, you'll survive only 4-7 hits per enemy, so you still have to be very careful.

Thanks. That's significantly higher than I expected based on past Souls games.

I'm comfortable around 30 vigor and 25 endurance as a sword and shield user. Shields are the biggest life insurance. It is also noted that resistance to damage go up the higher level you are.

I'm doing caelid just fine with 30. On the other hand, i have 40 END and am wearing super heavy armor + tower shield, barely anything pass and damage are reduced a bit (still take heavy blows). A ranged character would need less, etc. It depend, there is no definite answer

As much as you want. 99 Vigor gives you about 2200 health. Keep leveling it till you think the gains aren't worth it anymore.

40 is the first soft-cap. Up until there the amount of HP you gain per Vigor point goes up the more you spend, hitting nearly 50 HP per point in the upper 30's, then dropping to around 25 HP at 41. Pushing to 40 as quickly as you can do so without gimping other parts of your build will help a LOT to minimize the frequency of 1-shots. I believe 60 is the second soft cap, where after that you gain nearly nothing from going further, so unless you're going deep into NG+ progression you'll stop somewhere in that 40-60 zone.

Define one-shot, because a combo isn't really a one-shot unless you stagger and can't possible escape it before it hits you again. I leveled VGR to 40 as first stat. END on the other hand is nearly useless, since there's almost 0 stamina management in the game. Only good if you want more burst damage for a slow target and/or want to wear heavier armor and stay below 70% load.

No, it was always that high, 40 VGR was the go-to for any of the previous games. Maybe less so in DS2 thanks to passive health increases from leveling other stats too, but in ER I see way too many people with no health. At Iron Keep and its main boss I often see people getting one-shot, in armor, who have less than 1100 health. One guy I saw had 549 or something like that.

I played through the majority with 49 VGR via talisman and -10% damage negation. Yet only like 1 or 2 enemies can one-shot me up to Ashes of Ariandel. That area is very late game and has some really nasty enemies who can take off 65-70% of my health, but one-shots still don't occur.

yeah it's beyond me how people play with less than 40. Early on, sure, but in late game areas?

I stopped at 60. 60-61 was only 3 health per point.

I got away with 30 plus godrick's rune active (so 35 with the stat boost) to not get one shot by the random mobs in caelid. around 40 is what most people recommend, tho

Which level is "high"? I wandered into Caelid with current character who is under level 40.

Gotta say hug zombies are annoying.
