Just found his body sitting on a chair at a table in the Academy outside the class grace.
How the ♥♥♥♥ did he die?

Based on nothing but head canon he meddled with magic outside his admittedly limited capacity. The spell you find on his body, his "lifelong pursuit" is a barrier, so maybe he failed to deflect the spell that killed him?

He forgot to level vigor, it could happen to you too, if you don't level it.

Nah he is clearly a drug addict and the true reason why he wanted to go back there so badly is to get to his hidden stash of meth and then he instantly took an overdose..
