Useful summon spirits
Hi...

Is there a list of useful summon spirits somewhere?

Such as the jellyfish or rot dog being able to poison...

I've already seen a dozen articles about how OP the mimic tear is, but I am curious what other kinds of utility can be provided by the other summons.

Probably the fextralife wiki.
Apparently there's over 61 ashes we can find in the game. it's probably impossible to upgrade all of them in one playthrough so pick a few that matches with your character's playstyle. like soldiers of godrick if you want some melee support for a caster.
or a giant ancestral archer if you yourself are a melee tank
If you don't care about spoilers here is a list of some from Eurogamer:

Oleg upgraded is insanely strong
You will get a lot more mileage out of any spirit summon if you stop telling yourself they are OP.

Buying into the hype is a good way to get smashed when an enemy pulls an instant 180 like they have eyes on the back of their head mid attack chain against your pals.

See also: "Gosh, these pets are sooooo OP" *two out of three summon wolves die to a single normal wolf you could one-shot because your pets deal basically no damage out of the box*

Which just ramps up with how PvE enemies get more poise than you. Have fun expecting pets to "interrupt" enemies that can tank through a leaping greatsword swing.

This is another reason to keep a leash on your expectations.

You know what everyone who hypes up Oleg never warns you about, because it would detract from the "OP EZ mode" sales pitch?

Hey wiki, how much FP does it take to summon oleg... a flat one hundred FP? wow! that needs 20 mind just to have 100 FP in the first place. I'm sure your character started with that much Mind or could easily afford throwing it into your build if you were not a caster in the first place, right?

Also I believe the Jellyfish, Mimic Tear and Oleg are considered really strong.
Summons are more for drawing aggro so you can heal hp/fp and buff. None that I've come across so far are actually capable of doing much damage, and I have Lhutel at +5.
Early game Jellyfish is quite tanky and causes poison buildup i found wandering nobles was decent when fighting mobs of trash.
So far i have used Jellyfish, Ancestral Warrior and Nepheli and if you have them upgraded they are all great. Some of the weaker multiple summons like dogs I dont think can last you into the endgame because they cant tank. I have yet to use some of the named summons with shields but im guessing they are gonna be monsters.
I have mimic he's only as strong as you i upgraded him once but me being a wizard and him being my dumb mimic means he attempts my strongest and slowest spells.

There is no greater joy than watching your mimic try to imitate you without any skill or urgency.
The general strat for dealing with any boss using spirits, is to have the boss regularly change aggro, to give you some breathing room. Their point isn't so much to deal damage, I feel, as it is to tank damage.

Great Shield Soldier ashes are pretty great for this. Kristoff too.

I watched a streamer use Oleg and he was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up a boss.

if you only use your spirit summon to give you some breathing room just use the funny little jellyfish
I don't use the spirits but i was curious to which one was the best so i tested the special spirits that i had at the time "which was 8" on the boss infront of the deathroot npc and the Black Knife Tiche out classed all of them by far. Its projectiles melted the boss and it managed to almost kill him by himself. The second best one was mimic because it was able to copy my weapon skill.

The game categorizes the spirits in your menu. The ones furthest down towards the bottom are usually the better ones.

Off the top of my head, Oleg, The Mimic, Bloodhound, and the headless knight are the best four out of them all.
