The game favors fast weapons waaaay to much. Especially with bosses
Don't get me wrong, game's great and I enjoyed it so far. But outside of cool factors, I honestly feel like I'm gimping myself using colossal weapons. I've played comically large weapons in all games, ranging from this to Monster Hunter and Elden Ring is where heavy weapons feel the most gimped.

Not counting that bleed is busted right now (always has been in most From game now that I think of it), the playstyle of heavy weapons is just, idk, not rewarded.

Heavy wps rely on trading hits with enemies and come out on top via sheer brute force and tankiness, so to say. In this game though, with poise being quite weak and hyperarmor frames kicking in much later compared to DS3, it's a hassle. Bosses that don't get staggered, for example Bell Bearing Hunter, colossal weapons get maybe 1 or 2 openings while if you use faster weapons, it's way more forgiving. Jumping atk spam is very strong, but yknow it feels like I'm exploiting the system doing so.

Not to mention unlike, for example, MonHun where your slow weapons have mechanics to poise and/or reduce dmg while trading hits so you can win by playing your cards right. In here, there's no such thing. Either you have enough stats to win the trade or you don't. You don't have the choice to play smart.

Now this wouldn't be a problem if the big bois do much more dmg. But they don't. My Large Club at 30 str 2H do only 200 dmg more dmg than my Mace. This dmg difference can be easily overcome and the Mace ended up out DPS the big club anyway because it has so many more openings to hit (I did comparison runs on "brutish" enemies like Crucible Knights or Bell Bearing Hunter).

jump attack more, it has more iframes than you probably think and the staggers come more often with big weapons from what i've played (went from big heavy weapon to fist weapon cause i found a cool one so i've been on both sides of that)

Considering that endurance now finally ups equip load again, theres no reason to not have a fast side weapon for bosses with you. And no, I'll have to disagree, my friend plays greatmace, he wrecks everything.

Like I said, I feel like the balance is wrong if colossal weapons are reduced to spamming jump atk. Also staggers don't matter much with bosses because the bosses recover really fast + your weapon recover time is long. Some bosses I ended up just do jump atk since my wp isnt fast enough to even hit them after I stagger them.

Some bosses just, yknow, don't get staggered at all. Things like Crucible Knights I'm quite certain are immune since I'm using colossal warhammer (highest poise dmg wp) and they just don't flinch til death lol.

Greatmace isn't a colossal weapon though. The medium big bois are in a good spot. It's the big big bois that are weak.

Colossal weapons are stuffs that weight something like, 15+ unit.

not sure if they are immune to it just that they have really fast regen of it... its like your stam bar and regens back to full if you leave it alone. If you just spam jump attacks on some of the heftier guys you wont' ever break their stance simply because its slow enough that they regen their stance

my final build is planned to be a colossal weapon on my main and a fist weapon on my off hand

They're literally in the same weapon class. It literally is a collossal weapon. It's the same damn moveset with same swing speed. Now you're just looking for excuses...

Nope. That's DS3. Greatmace is Warhammer class. Colossal weapons/sword is a different class. It's written right under their name. They have different recovery frames and atk speed value.

Tell your friend to fight a Crucible Knight with UGS and then redo it with a Mace/Greatmace. See which one has faster clear time

jump attack is second best for stagger, a full charged heavy will do more stagger damage, and damage, but takes longer to pull off
Quadsword Mar 2, 2022 @ 11:59am
Probably going to scrap my current character and redo it with power stanced great swords. Colossal weapons just can’t hack it (figuratively or literally) against a lot of the tougher bosses.
