single player but you can summon friends for co-op or get invaded by people trying to kill you. You can play just single player (NPC invasion happen for story reasons or just for fun) by not using the multiplayer activation item though.

But if you want to summon allies you leave yourself open to invasions

Its mostly single player, its has what you could call "Functional" coop multiplayer but it really just criples the experience of the one being summoned.
