Also you can get both a Greatsword and a Flail in the enemy camp near the start of the game, the one in front of the gate, they are in the two black carriages, inside chests
like one of the other posters stated. The enemies drop what they use and wear. Not sure how deep this goes, but for instance that first knight camp with 2 carriages, I got: Flail, 1/2h swords/ halberd, med and greater shield, a full armor set etc. It took me a while though, but as far as I know whatever I see an enemy use I assume if I farm it enough I'll get the armor/weapon they use.
Whilst I have explored later areas, I've done most of my exploring in Limgrave, which includes finding a "secret location" (trying to be vague here), going to several castles etc. I've easily beaten more than twenty bosses.
Yet I don't seem to get many weapon / armor drops. I'm literally using my starting gear, still.
You get a reward for pretty much every bit of exploring you do, however that reward may not apply to the build you are looking to make.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does appear to take much longer to "gear up" in this game than classic souls games.
The whole gear scarcity aspect is also because there is no random gear in this game. Every single piece of equipment is hand placed and hand selected.
If gear were randomized like Nioh for instance, it would be a lot easier to "gear up."
I definitely prefer unique gear as opposed to randomized gear though, so no complaints from me on this aspect.
I mean, if you're really struggling, you can always pull up the wiki and look for a weapon that you might like. And then find it's location. I feel like weapons are kind of just everywhere, whether it be from boss drops, chest items or even regular enemy drops. Maybe I've been a little lucky on the enemy drop side, but even still, I believe that I have probably 30+ unique weapons just in my storage (not even including what's in my inventory) and most of them are not random enemy weapons. Also 0 of them are weapons from trading in boss souls. (minior spoiler)
edit, I'd add a screenshot, but I play on PS5 and transferring it is more of a pain than it's worth.
