The Great Rune stays Equipped when you die but if you activated a Rune Arc to boost the Great Rune, you lose the effects. So beware and try not to get killed since Rune Arcs are already rare enough.

Use Rune Arc for activated great rune. This gives the rune's effects.
So long as you do not die, you maintain the effect indefinitely.
If you hit a point where you're out of rune arcs, you could technically quit out and deaggro enemies/spawn outside boss rooms and avoid death temporarily, saving your great rune activation.

So - to be blunt: greater runes are useless unless you waste a rune arc [which are both limited and very rare]?

Rune arcs (with great runes) are the same as humanity/effigy/ember in previous games.
You become stronger, but you lose the effect when you die.

And the way to get rune arcs is through co-op and pvp.

Basically yeah considering how powerful the effects a greater rune gives. It's basically like Demon/Dark Souls when if you're Undead your stats are Half but revived and your stats are boosted.

Thanks for the infos guys. As I'm playing solo I have to make due without greater runes due to that limitation. I'm searching the world quite thorougly but so far I only have 4 rune arcs - way too few to even consider using one, let alone on a regular bases (e.g. "every harder boss"). Pity - I thought greater runes are part of the "natural character progression" and always have a passive effect active.

if you go to the roundtable hub, the creepy doll-merchant sells a few rune arcs

they should make the greater rune effects permanent or rune arcs unlimited to buy, because the bonuses are not even that op, godrick's one is like +5 to all attributes which is a minor buff

+5 to all attributes is not a minor buff. That is literally 40 levels for free.
