ELDEN RING
Anyone else miss armor upgrading?
I just really miss being able to beef up lighter-medium armor and having it be viable later into the game. One of the things I loved about DS2 was that you could have some early armor that you liked and keep upgrading it to where you could use it for most of the game if
you wanted to make the investment.

Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way. Personally I feel that the more customization options the better. Also- it looks like there is no poison/fire/chaos/etc enhancements for weapons. Is that the case? The crafting system means you can usually have buffs on hand but just curious. Having dual-wielding poison/bleeding daggers could be fun in earlier games.

No

God no

The Souls series is already bad enough about discouraging playstyle experimentation through equipment upgrades and enabling twinks via the same; the change in BB that carried into DS3 was an improvement IMO.
all armor in the curent system is viable, its a question ot what damage absorbtion do you want and how much endurance you are willing to pay for it. That being said, in order to make all armors viable the difference between them cant be to great, so a mage will die in 2 hits, a heavily armored knight will die in 3 or 4. It works well enough.
I just personally feel that the more options the better, especially in a deep-rpg-element game. Be curious as to anyone else's opinions. My little circle all missed the ability to upgrade armor and I guess I don't see what the harm would be... and it especially helps early on when you don't have a huge amount of armor selections.

Why not use the transmog system so you can maintain whatever armor appearance you would like?
Upgradable armor reduces your options, because you are punished from switching away from your upgraded set. As it stands, you can freely mix and match and swap armor as desired. In DkS1, if you upgraded some greaves you were never planning on changing them out because all other options would be unupgraded, and therefore less efficient.

This is a good idea, but in PvP it would be really unfair because one relies on looking at the opponent's armor to determine whether they're likely to poise through certain attacks and win certain trades. Perhaps if it were only on your screen?

Armor upgrades are non-optional; it's a linear upgrade path with no player agency. If the goal is to make early-game armors viable into the lategame, the far superior option is better stat to weight balancing so they never become obsolete.
The best option for making all armors viable is to make their defensive value practically worthless to encourage you to learn to dodge and go full Fashion Souls.

After all, it worked for Bloodborne.
Huh. I'm honestly very surprised.
Just wondering- i'd be curious as to what Souls Game you guys started with, because I've never really run into very many people that like reducing the amount of stuff that can be upgraded. I know Sekiro had just about zero customization and DS3 removed the armor modding, but the people I know that started with DS1, 2, or Demon's Souls (which I don't remember if there was armor upgrading there) usually miss the lack of further upgrading options.

And the armor upgrading didn't mean that some early leather armor would be viable for the whole game, but it certainly made armor more viable for a longer amount of time.

Started with DS3, then did BB, then DS1, then ER. Never played Sekiro, DeS, or (any meaningful amount of) DS2.
No.

It was a waste of upgrade materials. If you wanted to upgrade a full set you needed 4x the amount of resources for a max upgraded weapon, and all that for barely any benefit in defence.

If you did upgrade something you feel you need to wear it, even if you find something you like more, you'd feel you'd need to use what you have already because it's upgraded and the new thing is not. Locking you in and taking away your choices.
Huh. I've just never found anyone anti-armor upgrading until I posted this. To each their own I suppose. It doesn't really matter, no point in going into this anymore I suppose.
i do not miss it its good we can find upgrades without wasting mats and runes just to
throw away armor in 5 mins
