I have observed the same problem, but I doubt it is the controller causing the stutters - my main suspicion was something to do with the anti-cheat system but really haven’t investigated it any further. I do not use the controller on many others games but it has never caused such jumpy frame rates
And had this problem in DKS3 too
I solve the problem after trying many solutions. But the solution worked thanks to the latest controller fix patch released yesterday.
There is a service called Windows Management Instrumentation and it was causing the stutters. Somehow Elden Ring was programmed in a way to need this service when playing with a controller even the service is actually is not needed. I checked the Windows Event Logs and verified that stutter happens after this service is does something. So the solution is to disable and stop this service.
I actually tried this before and it didn't work because after disabling this service the controller didn't work in the game at all. It was working fine in the Big Picture but not in the Elden Ring. However, after the patch they released yesterday I tried this solution again and it worked. Now I can disable the service and play the game with a controller without any stutter.
Here are the steps;
- Press "Windows + r" and type "services.msc"
- Find Windows Management Instrumentation, Right Click -> Properties
- Change startup type to "Disabled", Apply and then stop the service as well.
I keep it disabled all the time but you might wanna enable it back after you are done with the game because service might be needed later.
I also had the same issue with DS3 as well. However, this solution won't work with DS3 because if you stop the service then the controller won't work. Just like Elden Ring before the latest patch.
Aye thanks for the tip.
Going to try that today.
Let's hope it works. But it's really sad that those games (dks3, sekiro, elden ring) are the only one having this bug and requiring to do that.
This fix actually worked for me. I can't quite believe it. Do you by any chance use a program called "Cold Turkey Blocker" on your PC? I believe that the program was utilising Windows Management Instrumentation and was causing the issue.
Dude thank you so much. I know this has been up for a while now but I recently started having this issue.
I spent 5 hours trying to fix this issue, your fix is the only one that's worked for me.
Please be aware that turning Windows Management Instrumentation off can cause issues with connecting to VPN. I've found that disabling Xbox services worked better for controller freezes in ER.
I've seen that third programs may cause this bad perfmormance but im not sure if this could be the problem that my game is running bad.
