The Tree Sentinel is a joke
I've been at this mini-boss for 3 hours and I get so close but every time he does the shield bash or horse slam I'm getting f**ked for nothing. The hitbox is whack out of place. I would at times roll under him or to the side yet the shield catches me??!!

I got stuck on his 2nd phase for some time too. I kept trying to roll into his AoE attacks thinking my iframes will save me, but it doesn't. In the end I had to roll away from in, at the right moment. The latter is important as some of the shield slams have delayed timing.

Another thing to note that can catch you off even when you have cleared it is when his horse does the side step to the right. That somehow catches me when either I'm behind or front of the horse.

get the horse and then try fighting him.

Do you get horse later on, or soon? I don't mind spoilers.

The horse is given by the maiden, who approaches when you rest at a Site of Grace. The key is to "rest": if you just activate the sites and never rest, she wouldn't appear. And she does not necessarily appear at the Site in front of the Storm Gate, for me she showed up at the Church of Elleh.

I think the horse does that when I stay on his right (weapon side) for too long. So I'd do at most three quick attacks, then back off. Generally, for phase 1, his shield (left) side is safe.

follow the first 2 or 3 grace guides to open up a couple lost grace sites and an npc will appear to give you your mighty steed and ability to level up (agree with what she offers)

ignore him and come back later or suffer in endurance run

That dude's hitbox is whack. He'd just be strolling along completely oblivious and my spells would just clip through his neck and miss.

I figured well, if you're gonna cheese me, I'm gonna cheese you. If you have magic and or presumably a lot of arrows and a bow, you can lure him to the elevated ruins nearby, I used the one a short ways to the south east and spammed spells at him. If you're melee or don't want to cheese, then git gud is probably your only recourse. However, if you have some patience and ranged abilities..

-Allocate your flasks to focus restore, you won't need any healing flasks, but take one if you're worried.

-Stand on northwest tip of ruins to the southeast a short distance of where he appears. He will eventually get close enough to aggro and start walking towards you. Commence range attack.

-Watch for golden shield spell that will reflect your shots back. Side dodge to avoid, though they often hit the ruins instead of you. Better safe than dead.

-He can sometimes get up on the platform if he's on the lower north side.

-He can hit you with his halberd through the ground.

-He will sometimes despawn and respawn at his origination. Don't worry, his health won't refill.

-If he rests his weapon on his shoulder and starts slowly riding away from you, commence spell spam as he will not react. So long as you don't get down. When he gets out of range, mount up, jump down for a moment and then go back up, he will re engage. If you do it right, he will then immediately give up and walk away, letting you spam him with spells without reacting. You can then repeat this until he's dead and he won't fight back properly.

Congrats. There is no unsportsmanlike conduct in Elden Ring. Do what you gotta do.

I played enough of these types of games by now to have learned that if I´m getting frustrated by a boss or area I´ll go level up somewhere else and come back later and try again.
I tried that boss at first same as you so I gave it one hit realized how long it would take given how much damage I was doing and just ignored it.

That´s what I base if I fight something or not on, is my damage reasonable against it.
Nothing worse than having to chip away at a health bar for 10 minutes only to get wombocomboed to death when they spaz out after half their hp is gone...

guess that´s why I spent thousands of hours in the ds games but gave up on sekiro towards then end.

What works for me is back and forth charging the sides of the Tree Sentinel with horse. When upclose, circle around closely and aim the horse's butt but don't get too aggressive. Attack once or twice then back off before it attacks.

No this is for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ real ^ I spent so long learning EVERY move of his but that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ side shield bash or horse slam is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and not even timed correctly that you can never dodge it.
Jenohart 26 fev. 2022 às 20:25
No for real, actual and serious, just fight him on a horse. I was bashing my head against him with no success (and massive amounts of stuttering) before I gave up. A while later I was like "wait, why don't I just fight him on my horse?" and killed him in one try. Ride up, take one swing, run away, keep doing that and he can't hit you. It helps to use a heavy weapon like a greatsword so you only need one hit. It's amazing how much easier it is to fight large enemies on horseback.

Yea, tree sentinel is no joke. You should come back later. When you see the item you get from defeating him, you'll see that the game doesn't really "expect" you to beat him at the start of the game.

I feel like it's a test and a way to start the game off. If I'm reading it all wrong then I'll avoid him.
You're right it's a test, but not the kind you're thinking. The open nature of the game encourages you to leave and come back. If you feel like you need to beat every boss you see in order the moment you cross paths with it, you're going to be in for a bad time.
Nope 26 fev. 2022 às 20:27
All of his swing is very punishable, it's stay near and dodge either toward the butt or to his the shield side
The horse rush is just dodge backward follow the horse direction, horse stomp is only required a few step backward no dodge needed
Just the damn hip check is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid, what with Japanese and their PTSD hipcheck attack???

The shield bash required practice because it lingering hitbox are just a long as your dodge but if you positioned always to his right, he will use it only a few time which often is from combo attack
The ground pound won't kill you and easy to dodge

It only took me 2h to kill him :lunar2019piginablanket:

you absolutely need the horse. go into the game. skip him. go get the horse. and come back. you dont even need to level up. you just need the horse tbh.
