Parry tips?
I usually avoid parrying in Souls games, mainly because the timing is weird and the punishment for failing it is usually me dying. This time, though, I decided to pick up a Parry Dagger and see what I can do.

My main question to start this thread is this: Is there any clear way to tell what I can parry and what I can't? It seems like it doesn't work on 90% of the attacks in the game. Either that, or the timing is just that strict. Is it possible to do it on any of the non-basic enemy weapon attacks? Or against any non-soldier-type enemies?

I tried the Parry Ashes of war on dual wield scimitars. For me at least, its almost impossible to parry xD
parry can be pull of and its pretty satisfying if you do but some monsters or bosses are unparryable no mather how good you time there attacks

but with the game lagging sometimes its even hard to pull off parrys at the moment

I don't have any lag. I'm just running into that weird thing where a "Parry Dagger" exists, but almost nothing in the game is actually parryable, and I'm starting to wonder if this is just a PvP weapon.

It can be done, but yes with difficulty. I was able to parry Margit a bunch of times, but it was out of desperation to beat him. I'm waiting for the ER equivalent of the target shield with a more generous parry window.

Margit can be parried??? See, that's why I was asking about it. Is there any way to know, or do I just throw my arm out everywhere and see if it gets chopped off?

Yep, Margit can be parried. Some of his attacks are unblockable, I'm sure, like any that use magic. His attacks with the staff or whatever it is can be parried, though.

One thing to note is that in ER, parry is a skill and not every shield can do it, even small ones. I started as an astrologer class, so my starting shield had the parry skill on it.
there's no way to tell in-game, from what i know, as to who and what can be parried or not. generally, assume humanoids can be outside of bosses (some can though, in the past).

other monstrous critters are hit and miss, and afaik pretty much all beasties that aren't mat farming mobs are unparryable (but again, i could be wrong).

getting the parry timing right is a difficult skill to master, though. don't feel bad for being terrible at it at first. i'm still bad at it myself, and i've got over 1300 hours logged between ds 1+2+3.

i've been training on the tough spear guy (mainly) and other soldiers running around the gatefront ruins, where you find the first map segment. keep at it, and you will get better.

Parry like pizza and long walks on the beach. Parry is a big fan of professional wrestling, He's a virgo.

Parry only works on humanoids and rarely on bosses (and likely only works on some of their attacks). The timings are a little tighter than in the previous games. Practice on soldiers!

Hey! I'm a virgo too! Where can I meet this Parry fellow? Cuz there can only be one... And he's a pro wrestling fan too. My cause is just.

Thanks for the advice!

Okay, parry is dead to me. I got a few sweet kills with it. I got a great parry off on that NPC invader in the Hub. I'm putting it down. I feel like I'm massively gimping myself by not either putting on a real shield, or putting on a higher damage secondary. The parry window being smack dab in the middle of the animation, combined with running into multiple ranged enemies and giant monsters that I can't use it on, just kills it.
Hans Meiser 27 Thg02, 2022 @ 12:31am
Parry feels seriously scuffed right now. You can be as spot on as you want and will only get partials most of the time. Something definitely feels off, either the window is too close to the start or end of animation or the parry frames on normal shields are basically non existant. I mean I've gotten them, but it feels incredibly inconsistent, even when being idiotically accurate with the timing on the same enemy.

Edit: Just to make it clear, I'm only talking about PVE parrying, not PVP, that is an entirely different topic alltogether.

Parry their arm face up on windups or the second blow of slow spinning attacks. I doubt anyone is consistent at parrying every move in any direction given that some are basically light speed.

Parry is counter-intuitive since DS3. Use the new Block-R(3)etailate to stagger enemies.
Works wonnders.

Parry officially stopped working after DS1
