Here's The "FIX" for Controllers Not Working
After wasting a lot of time attempting everything, posting a video, and discussing it with others; we've arrived to the "solution" to controllers not working.

"fix" and "solution" are in quotes because it's extremely dumb and a hassle, when the controller works perfectly fine on all other From Software games and even the Adventure Guide it comes with.

1. Put Steam in Big Picture mode.

2. Make sure your controller is working in this mode. Because...

3. Unplug your keyboard and mouse, and anything else that might be seen as a controller such as a footpedal. (Not a joking)

4. Launch Elden Ring with your controller.

5. Make sure you can get into the main menu before plugging back in the keyboard, mouse, etc. It should work fine at that point. But you still have to do this whole process every time.

EDIT: Be advised this particular problem was fixed like, a week or two after launch. Maybe this guide will help for other controller issues though. It took entirely too long to fix though, and all of us who had this issue on launch missed out, and had the game spoiled.

The fix that worked for me was having to "unplug my keyboard" before starting the game, and then reconnecting it after it was loaded.

Are you using vJoy controller? Removing it helped me in my case (leaving only 1 controller available)

sorry i uninstalled this game and requested a refund. major oversight. I might buy again later when all this is sorted, if they do get it sorted... but wow. so dumb we have to resort to unplugging peripherals.

YOu know what worked for me on ds3 was to flip the mouse upside down so the sensor didnt change inputs every 2 seconds and then my controller worked

i noticed that i have to do a system restart with a few select controllers removed then start the game before plugging them in.

also steam is literally FORGETTING my controllers, when i save a preference on a name and profile it always on start up just brings it back to the data before i did that. also it switches which controller gets which profile.

Welp I got the deluxe version for my boy, a birthday pressy, and he wanted to play with controller alas we only have ps3 controllers.

I installed DsHidMini and then DS4Windows and it didn;t work at first but then I had to redo the ds4 installer thing and choose the hideHID and fakecontroller option thing and now he is playing with our PS3 controllers wired.

The problem with this one is it doesn't change inputs at all on the fly. You have to launch with only what you want to play with connected

I just plug my Switch Pro controller and play like I do with every other game. No need to change anything. I've never tried Steam on big picture either. Also I've tested ER with an old Xbox 360 pad and it also works flawlessly, no need to take anything.

The game isn't the problem (at least not in terms of real-time controller management and compatibility)

How can't it be the game is every controller test I run shows it's fine and all other games work fine, including the adventure guide the game ships with?

No, you are wrong. The game is the problem.

A lazy developer wrote terrible input code. That's it. Until it's fixed it's going to be broken for most of us.

Thx for the advice... Didn't work for me... I've tried many different things. Nothing works.
I've never had an issue with controller support, not even with old fromsoft games. Very disappointing!

Sorry for my poor English. I had the same problem, but if you see "HID-compliant game controller" under "Human Interface Devices" in the Device Manager, right-click on it and disable it, and my controller is now recognized.

I did find a solution. Try this:
Create a restore point if you're a nervous type like me.

Install HIDHide
Reboot
Run HidHide
On the Devices tab near the bottom:
check Filter-out disconnected
and
check Enable device hiding

Now, put a tick next to each device other than the controller you'll be using. All of them.

Finally, run Elden Ring

You are effectively unplugging everything other than your controller. You have Google. Use it to find links and further details, if you like. Also, if you tried every 'solution' you've found on the internet, you might want to review your Steam and game controller settings and change them back to normal settings.

Hope this helps
