Invisible Enemies Megathread
Want to keep all the workaround ideas for invisible enemies in the same place just in case they work for others. They do not work for me so if anyone has other ideas, please include them in this thread and I'll keep this list updated.

Please read the list below before contributing an idea.

***NEW***

Patch 1.04 seems to have fixed this for the majority of us. Please let us know if you are still experiencing the issue.

For those who suspect they are running into this due to CPU issues, it may help to try the following program. It has not been tested in this thread but looks promising based on Reddit posts.

Confirmation is starting to roll in that the game is not properly offloading visual assets to the GPU, despite that the configuration to force high performance GPU usage only is set.

This is happening with both Nvidia and AMD hardware. It is also happening on both Windows and Linux. Also happening on PS4 reportedly.

Current theory is this is due to a bug in the culling system the game uses when it's not getting enough resources. Many people have noted it's their CPU, but it could be due to other issues as well. If you haven't cleaned your fans in a while, it's worth a shot. If you don't have experience cleaning your computer well, please look it up before attempting!!

Busted theory, thanks everyone for testing: There seems to be a threshold when the game goes below 30 FPS that causes the enemies to be drawn incorrectly (go invisible). We need some more people to test this theory and confirm.

Example of what it looks like when affecting the horse: https://imgur.com/a/r6PeDJD

For those on Windows laptops check your power usage settings at Settings > Power Options > Change Battery Settings

Please take 2 minutes to send a ticket to bandai about this problem, if they receive more reports they may give it a higher priority.

Workarounds mentioned so far that DO NOT WORK FOR MOST PEOPLE:

- Restarting everything
- Verifying game integritiy
- Reinstalling Elden Ring
- Clean reinstalling driver
- Setting Elden Ring and Steam to high performance in Graphics Settings
- Disabling the Root Enumerator
- Try only using one monitor
- Try only using one non-widescreen monitor
- Reducing settings to lowest
- Trying fuilscreen, windowed, and borderless
- Changing resolution
- Disabling Nvidia shader cache
- Different setting in the nvidia setting, global and for elden ring specific
- Disabled control flow guard
- Turn off Steam and Nvidia overlay
- Offline mode
- Turned off anti cheat
- dx11 as launch setting does nothing (as expected)
- Starting a new game after implementing fixes
- Using an older driver
- Toggle Windows Gaming Mode
- Resting at a bonfire for a few minutes
- Changing game path to another drive
- Toggle Auto-detect Best Rendering Settings
- Delete GraphicsConfig.xml in C;/Users/Account/AppDataRoaming/EldenRing, verify, and restart
- Update Windows to the latest patch as well as .net redistributable
- Clean reinstall drivers twice
- Re-format and reinstall windows
- Turn on automatic tuning in GeForce Overlay
- Turn off Discord overlay
- Changing all graphics settings to low with unlimited shader cache on, and slowly increasing started with lowest resolution
- Use a non-3rd party charger for your laptop
- Turning off desktop scaling
- Turning off VSYNC in NVIDIA Control Panel specifically for Elden Ring
- Playing in big picture mode

I just went to "that" location in Limgrave, used torrent and aggro all the soldiers and nothing disappeared :stimulation:

Yeah, agree too. This was not even a bad launch, it was worst. I love From, but this was totally disrespectful, not a minor bug, a crazy massive ♥♥♥♥ bug that just killed the emotion of launch.
This patched-after-lauching attitude have to change in industry.

Everyone is still pre-ordering like games are scarce or something.

I don't 100% remember but I think when I played Dying Light many years ago on a very old setup, the game was still playable because they had implemented a dynamic way of resolution change when there is too much going on on the screen.

It is also an open world game and whenever there were car explosions or too many zombies and effects, the game would turn blurry for a few seconds.

Something like that could work But with a finished code almost impossible to change.

They could add a slider for people to choose how far they want to see objects in the open world and also an in-game performance display like for example Destiny 2 has. That way people could adjust their game to run at stable 30+ fps.

I found something that "fixed" it for me.
My laptop was getting 25-28fps, constant invisible enemies. I tried pretty much everything listed in the thread, but what finally got it working was enabling Turbo Mode in my bios. I was just messing around and found it randomly in the power & performance options. Im now getting 35-45 fps and not having issues with invisible enemies.

I know this probably wont make a difference for most people, but I had no idea that it was even an option so hopefully this helps someone else out too.

I guess the main problem is that they don't reappear again, even with slightest throttling problems or something? You actually should send that find to the devs too, i think, maybe they read it, and maybe it really help them fix it sooner
The problem is, they probably already know about that. On my old laptop i had throttling problems with dark souls 3 but it would only tank my fps, never ever have i had an invisble enemy in my life, nor i ever experienced that in any other game. If they do become invisible in elden ring is because the devs decided so somewhere in the code. They thinked it was somehow fine to make enemies invisble instead of lowering your fps if your cpu isn't giving enough power to the game. This is also related to other people theory who said that there is probably a system which lowers the enemy rendered at a single time based on distance from your character but this distance is probably bugged and it makes like you can't see anything unless you are so close that you are touching it.

Edit: Sorry i forgot to explain the main point. The main point is that since they know your cpu will throttle if you have X enemies rendered at one time, that the game will never go back after throttling because even if it did you were going to face throttling again. So it is probably intended behaviour to not reset the distance enemies are rendered and it is fine, the main issue is the bug in the distance (i think, i may also be completely wrong)

IF they know then why are they asking us to inform them about the problem? it makes no sense

Just keep an eye on your temperatures whenever you do that. It's basically stock over clock settings. I would again not suggest to do these things as risking a system just to play a badly optimized game is not worth it. They will find a way to patch this problem. I am confident in that.

Allow me to spell that for you : H-Y-P-E
Something entirely conceptual, and I'd argue, illusory, that feeds upon the need of consumers to be "on top" of everything. Be the first to play the next big game, clear it as fast as possible using the best builds, the most optimized everything, so you can feel like you're part of a digital community that, quite frankly, isn't real at all.
We're not playing games anymore, we're existing through the fact that they are acknowledged as real life achievements.
We therefore get the real life treatment : unfinished products, for the highest price we'd pay, so that shareholders can put some more butter on their fat piece of bread.
Anyway, back on topic : tested undervolting my CPU to no good result.
Started fighting my way towards the third castle.
Hell I'm sure I'll have this game finished before they fix it. At least I hope I can go through the complete experience in NG+.
Felix Shift 2022 年 3 月 1 日 下午 3:21
@ RaZiel, can't argue with that
Chromado Citizen 2022 年 3 月 1 日 下午 3:28
Yeah, 100% agree. Elden Ring case adds the guy-from-GOT hype and we know that was more for marketing than any other reason. As game industry grows on top of the entertainment industry, mixed multimedia marketing with actors and directors will grow on games too and unjustified hype will flow even worse.

hi ! I don't think my solution will apply to everyone here, but I figured I recently enabled TPM and Virtualization from within the BIOS, and had been having issues since then. I'm not all knowing in computing but I figured I had nothing to lose by going back in the BIOS and disabling them. And tada, that solved my invisible enemies issue ! I think it might have something to do with core virtualization on older machines ! But I played a solid 2 hours with absolutely no issue !

There's a youtuber that I like following call FightinCowboy he done a lot of videos and since he gets promo keys. He been releasing videos based on the PC game play and now after the 15th video I have been seeing some of the issues.
Like frame drops, enemies tether issues, and invisible enemies. Due to how the guy likes to play and fact he got a top tier gaming rig, I don't think he's noticed this bug. But yeah I noticed that in fact he was getting this bug as to how the enemies were doing that noticeable fade in/out business.
If it wasn't due to the limited promo release contract I would have seen the issues with this game and waited on getting it so soon. I still want to play this game but this bug really killing it for me.
So as I'm nearing the 2 hour mark and none of the fixes have worked well enough for me to enjoy the game I'm waiting on the patches. Other wise I'm just going to have to ask for a refund as I can't play this as it stands, which costs me $100 where I am and that's my hard earned money.

I highly suggest getting one now and stating the reason why, you can always rebuy it and by refunding it you send a clear message; that is if they pay attention to refunds at all. Hopefully so.

I went through stormveil castle AND redmane with basically all enemies invis. Only way I can tell where they are is by locking on. It's a joke.
I have to try and infer what they're doing by where the lock-on point is and how it's swaying around, and sound effects..
I think the invis bug is something to do with draw distance like people were saying, cos if you fool around with camera, zoom in with ranged weapon, get very close to enemy, or just swing the view around a lot they'll become visible, sometimes.

It seems to affect humanoid enemies the most. Bigger enemies like dragons, giants, etc don't go invis. Probably because they aren't removed as much by draw distance.

mind me asking what cpu you are using?

I have the exact same cpu, literally
this is probably a hardware related issue, my cpu is overcloked to 4 ghz and still doesn't work even tho it is more than needed to run it smoothly

Seems to be this issue is the last that left on their list of problems to fix, for pc version (not including general optimization), according to bandainamco website. So hopefully its going to be in the very next update. Gonna keep my fingers crossed
