STUTTER FIX - 12 ways to improve performance & fix stutter
I compiled all solutions I've found into this post that allegedly fix stuttering in Elden Ring or at least improve in-game performance somewhat. I used ALL of these solutions/suggestions simultaneously, but the game only really started to run well after I also did step 6 and step 7. The game runs significantly better now. It's still not perfect, but much more playable.

  1. Run the game in Borderless Windowed/Windowed mode instead of in Fullscreen mode.
  2. Replace "start_protected_game.exe" with "eldenring.exe" (this allows you to play without EAC, but only offline).
  3. Download the latest version of FlawlessWidescreen and enable the "Frametime Adjustment" setting for Elden Ring in it.
  4. In Windows search "graphics", then click on "Graphics Settings". Choose "Desktop App", and click "Browse". Search for Elden Ring's executable and set it to "High Performance".
  5. Repeat the previous step for Steam's client.
  6. Turn off Steam overlay in games ("Settings/In-game").
  7. Enable background processing of Vulkan shaders in Steam ("Settings"/"Shader Pre-Caching").
  8. In Nvidia Control Panel, increase "Shader Cache Size" to "Unlimited" ("Manage 3D settings"/"Global Settings").
  9. In Nvidia Control Panel, set Elden Ring to "Prefer Maximum Performance ("Manage 3D settings"/"Program Settings"/"Power Management").
  10. Disable Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator (Windows key + X/"Device Manager"/"Software Devices").
  11. Disable Fullscreen Optimizations (right-click on "start_protected_game.exe", then click on "Properties", and then on "Compatibility").
  12. While running the game, set Elden Ring's CPU priority to "High" (in Task Manager, search for a process called "start_protected_game.exe").

Alternatively, I shouldn’t need a Rosetta Stone to decipher the 20 different methods to maybe make the game run better. It should just work.

Use a Reparo spell on it, maybe it will fix the game.

I noticed a tiny bit of stutter while loading stuff, but not the massive amount people keep bringing up. Although, fighting on horseback feels unplayable, I will admit. And not just from the stutter that pops up when you do. It's just janky as hell and so are mounted enemies. Big-ass sweeping attacks with long as hell reach, followed by zipping all over the damn place.

I fear no man, but those mounted enemies, they terrify me.

Cap your frames to 59fps. This removes the stutter for me, but i have still fps drops.

Great list. Thanks.

If I run in offline mode, does it automatically do this fix, or do I specifically have to do this? I've seen some others mention offline mode on the forums. I generally prefer not doing co-op, but will miss the funny messages.

This could be because the in-game vertical sync is probably bugged that you normally can't turn off because there's no option for it in-game.

Thanks to OP for making this list. That said, I will be waiting to see if they manage to patch it, or get a refund.

Thanks for sharing these tips friend, now the game is much more smooth and comfortable to play. Still, I hope patches will come soon to polish performance.
