I don't get the appeal of watching streamers
Why watch someone play a game instead of playing it yourself?
Maybe I'm just too old to "get" it

I find Streamers to be pretty obnoxious as a whole and just not really that good, (boring). Therefore after a few and I mean a few streamer tries I just decided not to watch any type of streaming.
There are literally thousands of streamers. They're not the same person FYI.

Luckily, you don't have to.

It's been a slow process of turning people into idol worshipping know nothing zombies if you were around when the internet was still dial up/using msn chat with your school friends you're probably terrified like me of what the internet has turned a large portion of the population into.

I don't believe you're old at all. If you were then you'd remember watching your friends playing Mario Bros or Sega Genesis and doing crazy stuff in games that take weeks or months to master and even be playable. When it came to your turn, you couldn't do half of that stuff because it takes time and experience with the game. Mortal Kombat had a million combos to memorize and took practice but it was glorious to watch someone beat people up with them. Sonic may be a singleplayer game, as most games were back then, but you could still participate in the watch party in a time before the internet existed. Saying this is like saying we should have just gone home and played by ourselves in our room. Nah.
Except streamers aren't your friends, you're not sharing anything with them because there's no real exchange, and they don't care about you anyway.
I'll play with my real friends online or from the couch, no need for some random to let me experience things through a proxy.

its for the younger crowd. I personally do not watch them as I don't believe in supporting internet beggars.

I think it's similar to the reason people watch let's plays, sometimes you just want to chill and watch someone else play a game with commentary.

The greatest concern I have with how the internet has developed is the "searchability" problem - search engines can exert an invisible will simply by NOT making certain things appear in search results and thus if it cannot be found - it might as well not even exist. This same problem is happening with eg Youtube comments - if your comment cannot be seen...

I don't watch them, never used Twitch either as its full of old people trying to act like they are 18.
Imagine a close friend, or someone you look up to, getting into an activity you really enjoy, and making videos of there own experience. It's kind of like that.

You might want to read about para-social relationships, the youtuber "Aydin Paladin" is a psychology major who does a good job of explaining it. It at least partly explains this, but at the same time, it really does not seem like a healthy development...

Streams are for those annoying backseat gamers who have no friends. I jest, its fun to watch someone play a game be it for the rage moments or moments of triumph. I rarely watch streams but when i do its because i want to see some gaming content but dont want to play myself right then.

A lot of people, like myself (I'm in my 40s btw), are involved in streamers' communities. We like to chat with each other and the streamer. Sometimes we join in community games with them. This particularly applies to smaller streamers; those with 100-200 viewers at a time. We get that they aren't our actual friends, but they are usually friendly and fun to interact with.
I know people in the communities of streamers I watch who have met and ended up dating, or even getting married, because of the streams. Others have made years-long friendships with those they chat with.

I can see why people might not 'get it' if their only experience of streaming is some neon-haired a-hole lording it over ten thousand screaming edgelords, but a lot of it isn't like that. Personally, because I have found a bunch of small to mid-sized streamers who I enjoy, I stopped watching tv altogether several years ago. I now watch mostly streams, and a few YT videos before bed.

Edit: I'm 38, don't try to "get it", it's not for us anymore.
