There's nothing separating preorders and regular purchases; since many publishers tend to milk money out of consumers with skins or items exclusive to preorders, there's nothing alienating those who wish to wait with buying the game. They're not losing out on anything, and I hope more publishers adopt this way of thinking.
Anyway, I do miss games made back in the day(where they stuffed tons of things along with the game disk). This went was for everyone. 30%-60% cost of making a game like that went to what was in the box and magazine advertising.
Example:
Infocom games had some neat stuff: http://infocom.elsewhere.org/gallery/greybox.html
Knights of the Sky: This game had a HUGE printed manual. Not just about playing the game, but details about WWI history and battles.
I do not mind game bonuses from steam, amazon, etc. Just give them out to everyone instead of using it as a carrot on a stick pre-orders.
1. The game will be patched, balanced, and "fixed"
2. Legit reviews will be in
3. The game will be cheaper
Even when pc games started becoming the norm, some of the most hyped games never got a patch (even if it was game breaking).
The only game that I can recall was Blade Runner (Westwood). I could not even play it, and you could not return games to the store after you purchased it. You were SOL with regrets.
"THE WORST THING A DEV CAN DO IS LOCK QUALITY CONTENT BEHIND A PREORDER BONUS."
"WTF THESE PRE ORDER BONUSES ITS LIKE THEY ARE NOT EVEN FORCING ME TO BUY BEFORE I KNOW WHAT IT IS WTF"
Still preordered.
