pre-order bonuses kind of blow
I'll wait until the game is released and review to see if I want to purchase it. I know I will eventually.

100% are garbage.
Pre order bonuses are hard to make people feel good about. Either you have the content available in the game normally which makes you wonder what the point of preordering is, or you get exclusive preorder content which makes people mad that exclusive content is only made available on a timed basis. Neither of these are gonna make everyone happy, and neither will not having any bonus at all, so you're really just screwed either way.

Yes, though I see this as a positive thing.
There's nothing separating preorders and regular purchases; since many publishers tend to milk money out of consumers with skins or items exclusive to preorders, there's nothing alienating those who wish to wait with buying the game. They're not losing out on anything, and I hope more publishers adopt this way of thinking.
I hate how they have to use preorder dumb bonuses. I had to get the preorder because i will play thousands hours at this game and i dont wanna miss anything, just a bad practice
Imho the only preorder "bonus" should be that you can play immediately upon release (which sadly even preload doesn't offer).
I am an older Gamer (hard to say that since I love playing games), but I do miss the days where there were no pre-order bonuses. I think this started with Gamestop/EB when trying to consumers gifts to lure them in to bu the game there.

Anyway, I do miss games made back in the day(where they stuffed tons of things along with the game disk). This went was for everyone. 30%-60% cost of making a game like that went to what was in the box and magazine advertising.

Example:

Infocom games had some neat stuff: http://infocom.elsewhere.org/gallery/greybox.html

Knights of the Sky: This game had a HUGE printed manual. Not just about playing the game, but details about WWI history and battles.

I do not mind game bonuses from steam, amazon, etc. Just give them out to everyone instead of using it as a carrot on a stick pre-orders.
I did pre-order the game but I am happy that no content is locked behind the pre-order. It's good for consumers. Only reason I pre-ordered was the preload being available, if the game has glaring issues I can refund it anyway.
It's a stupid marketing tactic, that shouldn't be relevant in your decision. I pre-ordered because I have confidence in the end product, and can afford the risk. But ultimately, waiting is the smartest move because:

1. The game will be patched, balanced, and "fixed"
2. Legit reviews will be in
3. The game will be cheaper
The was a downside to older games. If it was bugged, you usually were screwed because the game was never patched. Sometimes you could reach out to the publisher if they created new game disks with updated versions.

Even when pc games started becoming the norm, some of the most hyped games never got a patch (even if it was game breaking).

The only game that I can recall was Blade Runner (Westwood). I could not even play it, and you could not return games to the store after you purchased it. You were SOL with regrets.
I still have regrets ever time i see that game case.
You get a gesture early which can be earned later ingame anyway. So the preorder bonus here is little to nothing.
Yeah its pretty lame and stupid to preorder
lol jesus christ gamers these days.

"THE WORST THING A DEV CAN DO IS LOCK QUALITY CONTENT BEHIND A PREORDER BONUS."

"WTF THESE PRE ORDER BONUSES ITS LIKE THEY ARE NOT EVEN FORCING ME TO BUY BEFORE I KNOW WHAT IT IS WTF"
Yup.
Still preordered.

Nintendo did it in the late '80s and I know because I bought games for the NES and SNES because of the bonuses. Granted, it was mostly posters, and bonuses were a lot more physical in those days. As far as GameStop, I think that was more because we'd get the game the day of release. If you didn't pre-order, the game couldn't be bought as they didn't have enough games available to meet the demand. Not certain how that transition into what's being done today exactly; Just saying the practice isn't new. It's sorta marketing 101.
