To me, it is more about being able to react fast enough - and I have played all of the games save for this one when they came out on PS, so I got too used to the Claw Grip method (Thumbs for sticks, index fingers on face-buttons, and Middle fingers for upper/lower triggers except in boss where it is right side normal as you are locked on and don't need camera control) and have a hard time playing this or NIOH now without the Controller - have tried many times; started getting OK at NIOH, but boss rushes and stuff where impossible.
I would say - if this is your first Soulsborne; don't "fall" for controller being easier, it is when you get good at controller, else I have a buddy who smacks now on mouse and keys as he wouldn't buy one lol (basically, don't learn how to play twice just to try something, unless you are fine with that taking a little while; timing and such will never be different between them).
You do get used to it though and i still prefer using kbm to controller.
There are few things i would love to change that still grate after 70+ hours, number one being able to bind skills from both the left and right hand to separate keys.
You are probably right for ER, but kbm is by far the superior control scheme in general. I wonder if we will ever get a From game that takes advantage of it...
It's just my opinion.
Unrestricted mouse movements means that I almost never need to lock onto enemies to track them. I can flip around much quicker and dispatch of enemies far more efficiently and precisely than I could when I was using my controller.
But again, I didn't switch over until the camera fix mod was released on Nexus a few days after launch. Without the mod, controller is king.
When are you are you gonna need more than 8 movement directions (not to mention you can fine tune your position with mouse)?
Finer control over movement speed only comes up maybe 3-4 times in the whole game. And when it does it's only mildly annoying.
I wouldn't try to waste time on learning how to play on a controller.
I play with both mouse'n'keys or controller. Both work just as good.
IMO magic is better on mouse for free aiming spells.
- is solves the input lag+ roll dodge on release by splitting into two keys : the roll dodge on press and the sprint. It can help a lot when you see all the canceled and delayed animation, with massive input reading.
- you can add a plenty of option for item swap and so on.
- you can avoid the claw grip which is not healty on long term playing
EMU Light works on controllers too if you want its features on your fav gamepad ( so you can nearly double your buttones number)
