I am confused about rolling
My problem is on a PC, HOW DO I ROLL in combat? The online guides talk about solving a statue problem or looking for bells. They tell me how to roll on an Xbox (doesn't help) because I am on a PC. The system screen in the game says nothing about rolling. The guides I have read, after telling me all this non related info, conclude by saying that is how you roll. What is the idiots guide for rolling on a PC??????

The default controls are pretty typical for a lazy PC port. Industry standard for sprint is the shift key. But here, the default is space bar. ...which is jump in pretty much every game ever that you can jump in. Then again, combining dodge and sprint to the same key is a common practice of lazy PC porting. It's like the people doing the port have never heard of a keyboard before.

Well to be fair, the dodge button has always been space for souls game pc version. Would have been strange of them to change it now. Plus dodge and run are bound to the same key on consoles if I remember right.

Dodge and sprint are on the same button, so they put dodge on spacebar originally due to there never being a jump button till Sekiro.

I will check that, but I believe the space bar only backs me up, there is no roll. The A and D keys move me side to side. Which have worked well enough so far. I am now facing the two mages just inside the Academy and I can get them but almost all of my spell flasks are used and only 1 or 2 available for later.

Tap space and you will do a backstep. Tap space while moving in any direction and you will roll. Hold space to sprint. There are 3 types of roll depending on your weight threshold, light medium and heavy respectively. Keep below heavy and you will be fine. When picking armor for defense try to keep your weight just behind the border for heavy category to maximize defense while maintaining a medium roll. If you have trouble with input delay try borderless windowed mode, for some reason fullscreen often messes with your input delay and can screw up your dodge timing. Never spam your dodge roll if you dont have to, seriously you gotta time that thing and if you spam it then you'll just get hit on the backswing.
System -> Keyboard/Mouse Settings -> Controls -> Key Bindings

You should really take a look at the settings before you continue playing. Even tho they are quite bad in this game you can still move a few keys around to make it a lil easier for you.

Look for the action you want and change it to a key that suits you. I for example have "Jump" bound to [Space] and "Backstep, Dodge Roll, Dash" bound to left [Shift] as I found that works much better for me :)

Space bar to roll, and A,S,W,D keys to control direction. Note that there is an action queue, so if you are in the middle of an action you won't roll right away. Also you can lock onto your target with the "Q" key. It's great for targeting, but you may need to unlock if you need to move far and fast from a fast moving mob with long range.
