I'm struggling with the followup to a Parry...
I'm trying to fight Leonine Misbegotten.
... I really ought to upgrade my equipment, but I am currently still wielding the same dagger that I started out with as a bandit... Haven't found anything I liked yet.

I'm pretty successful when it comes to actually timing and landing the parry itself... but on many occasions, my character fails to take advantage of the boss being downed.
Instead of going in for the crit, I am just doing a light slash with my butter knife.

I surely would have defeated the boss last time I had a go at him if I hadn't whiffed FOUR crits that battle.

I landed a few though so I got the boss down to about 20%.

Is there a way to avoid just slashing at the downed enemy with your R1 attack?

Oh, it's getting worse.
My last attempt, I successfully parried three times before the boss killed me.

I got 0 crits somehow.

I don't know why I am failing at this.

You have to kinda just be standing in the correct spot. Just align right shoulder over enemy. Easier if you're right on top of them when you parry.

Just take a moment to square up to the boss before pressing r1. Unless Leonine behaves differently than other enemies with his model, you should have a few seconds before he recovers.

Im BAD at parrying, so take what I'm asking with a grain of salt.

Some bosses doesn't go into a "crittable" state after just 1 parry, you have to parry multiple times before you can crit them, maybe that's why you're not getting crits? Whether or not there's a timer you have to get all the parries within I don't know.

Also (while it shouldn't matter) when they do get into the "crittable" state, you don't have to light attack immediately, you have like a second or 2 to reposition in front of them and click light attack.

It helps to have an offhand weapon with a bit longer parry reach. With my timing, it's MUCH easier to time a Wakazashi parry when I put the ashes on that offhand blade, than it is with the dagger or parrying dagger from Patches...

It's actually pretty devastating, with the long Nagakiba in one hand, benefiting from bleed buildup on both weapons and powerstance attacks; the Wakazashi power stances with katana type blades rather than daggers. I believe it's the only short sword on which you can equip the parry ashes of war.

Hope that helps some!

give yourself a second to line up and dont spam R1. If you're too far away you'll just do a light attack.

Treat this boss like a Bloodborne boss, too. He's aggressive, you have a fast weapon so you do have an advantage, abuse quickstep.

No, this guy definitely goes down. I parry him and he tumbles over like one of those generic soldier boys at the start of the game.

It's weird that I am able to land the crit some of the time, but completely fluff it most of the time.

Yeah it's a bit difficult. I'm absolutely awful at this game and the feeling of urgency of getting that crit in as quickly as possible is tough to overcome.
But I have found that I have enough time to try to face him head-on before tapping R1, but I still fail it.

Maybe it's a distance thing...
Feels off to me that I am close enough to parry but not close enough to crit. :(

i just walk into baddies for a bit then r1 seems to always work

Are you using target lock? I find it's easier to get the crits with the target lock on the enemy. Even then once in a while it just does a light attack, no matter the enemy.

Oh yeah, I definitely have to keep target lock on, or I lose track of enemies like him. They move around too much.

You are failing the counter attack because you keep pressing forwards on the joystick. That's not how this game works or any of the souls games work.

You do the parry, you hear the super loud sound effect letting you know you can do the counter attack. Now you STAND STILL in front of the enemy or wherever the weak spot is and you hit right bumper or R1. You will succeed 100% of the time.

You fail because your character is still walking forwards when you are hitting the attack to do the counter and instead you just slash normally.

Do the parry, position yourself for the counter attack and LET GO OF THE STICK. Then attack
100% success rate

I see. I am unfamiliar with these mechanics, Elden Ring's my first FS title!
I will try to keep this in mind and get my thumb off the analog stick when it's time to crit.

Yeah you will git gud at this and be abel to do it at lightning speed once you get used to it. Your character just needs to not be walking or running when attempting the riposte or counter attack. Basically standing still and in the right position to ensure you don't do a regular slash on accident
brownie689 Mar 27, 2022 @ 1:14pm
For example there is 1 boss fight I know of that I can run in and backstab the boss before he even has time to react to my presence. I did it so many times I lost count
