ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING

View Stats:
Xbox One controller causing MASSIVE issues (No fix, but workaround)
So for the past 2 and 1/2 days since the most recent patch came out, I have been having EXTREME framerate spikes. Initially, it was slightly occasional minor hitching. It graduated to major hitching, then frequent major hitching, and eventually it got so bad that playing Elden Ring with my Xbox One controller was crashing a large number of vital drivers for the PC. These included the controller drivers, keyboard drivers, mouse drivers, and sound drivers. When the drivers would come back up, my start and search functions in Windows 10 would be completely broken and autoscrolling through the options so fast I couldn't use them.

It was very difficult to isolate this problem, as when I would restart the PC everything would be fine. All other games worked just fine with the Xbox One controller (from Steam games to multiple various and sundry emulators). I made sure that every single driver is up to date on my computer from the graphics drivers to controller firmware and drivers and all the way down to updating the BIOS and chipset for my hardware. I even attempted to force old drivers onto the controller to make it unable to control the start menu since I eventually figured out the controller was the culprit for the autoscrolling.

I happened to notice that playing the game on mouse and keyboard while the controller wasn't plugged in earlier today was basically a flawless experience. On a whim I decided for the first time in YEARS to connect my PS3 (DualShock 3) controller to the PC wired as an Xbox 360 controller and see if the game would freak out like it was with the Xbox One controller, and it DID NOT!

I have been floundering for over 48 hours to find anyone else reporting issues even remotely close to what I have experienced, and have not found so much as a drop of information. I hope if someone else out there is experiencing this issue that you stumble across this post and don't feel helpless for as long as I did.

If you are experiencing something similar and have another controller type lying around, give it a shot. I'm playing without issue now and haven't seen a hitch or a driver crash in over two hours. Before, I was lucky to go 10 minutes without my PC committing mass driver suicide.
