It's almost like, rather than adding to the maximum amount of status build up I can take before an effect kicks in, it is subtracting from the minimum I can have.... Like my current buildup is zero (or any number really), and then switching to the shield causes my 'minimum' to drop by -50... but my current build up is still zero (and immediately starts dropping to -50), so it suddenly shows up on screen as if it increased my build up, even though it really hasn't.
That's just a theory, anyway.
You're not getting punished for equipping the shield. Whenever your max is increased your current amount is increased by the same amount. E.g. if you gain 50 rot resistance, you also gain 50 current rot buildup.
You don't immediately gain an advantage by gaining more resistance, instead over the long term you gain more time before the status is applied.
I find it hard to properly explain without creating a huge wall of text. I can suggest looking into how status buildup works in this game.
