If there's something you want to share with your friends, you can always, like, hop on voice chat with them and play it. (or share one of your MP3s with them, which is still copyright infringement but you're much less likely to get smacked down for it)
I'm certainly not. I am advocating a less anti consumer and more welcoming way of supporting the game and its music. I mean, use your brain. Who would even be listening to the tracks on YouTube? If someone were to really get hooked on the game or the OST, they'd most likely go ahead and buy them anyway.
This kind of thing just makes the publishers look like greedy control freaks. It doesn't matter one bit if it is their "good" right to do this. It's simply a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ way to conduct yourself as a company. It's not like someone was trying to sell the music as their own work. Going against that is something I'd completely understand.
Why stop at just uploading music, why not promote the game by uploading the game itself on a platform that many have access to so that those who maybe hooked by the OST, or the story or the graphics or the combat or a combination of them will be kind enough to come on steam to buy the game and/or the soundtracks?
The proliferation of easily accessible audio and visual art via the internet doesn't make it morally or legally correct for third parties to take matters into their own hands and decide how the artists' art is distributed.
This isn't any semblance of Fair Use, this is wholesale stealing. Use beyond/without license and even getting paid out of it through monetization of the YouTube videos posting the entire OST. Furthermore, if they don't protect their copyright, they are liable to actually lose rights and protections of them in the future.
Not going to say I am above listening to music on YT, but to pretend this practice is fine, is a complete misunderstanding of how this does and should all work.
People will somehow magically be convinced that this game is good and sales will surely reflect that. I really hope they do.
It is literally stealing and directly competes with their product, the soundtrack. "Why buy the cow when I can get the milk for free?"
Since the game came out, I've been linking people bits of the soundtrack on YouTube to get them interested in the game.
Now I can't do that anymore.
Aggressively blocking this makes no sense.
I understand that it's copyrighted content, and they're technically allowed to do it. Doesn't make it a good idea.
No other game developer/publisher does this. They understand that it's free publicity for the game they're trying to sell.
People buy soundtracks for games they're fans of. In order to become fans of a game, they first have to play it. Having the soundtrack available on YouTube attracts more fans.
People aren't buying soundtracks for games they've never played.
If the devs/publishers want to upload the OST to an official channel, then I could understand them not wanting any other uploads of it.
Devs/publishers need to consider how much publicity they get from how many likes and views the OST receives on YouTube. As well as the ad revenue they get from the views. It's a win win.
Have you ever heard of Nintendo?
But, yeah, they should totally let people steal their product for exposure.
Play the free demo.
You realize you just said "Don't stop piracy because people will pirate"?
Now after it isn't available on Youtube, I have no other option other than buying it.
So let me get this straight.
You won't by the soundtrack....because you can't listen to the soundtrack without buying the soundtrack?
