and much later, a robotic character doing a certain move (they were like "don't forget to do the thing!" and I got my screenshot key ready ^_^ )
definitely not *only* playing to CT fans; I've seen easter eggs for other games and there's musical and stylistic similarity that has me feeling like I leap from that to Secret of Mana to Terranigma etc etc (without it being a carbon copy of any of them, so it's just nice nostalgic nods throughout)
Personal favorite is how [/spoiler]
I'm in the final (?) area and the Soul Curator is reminding me of a certain cowardly villain, I'm just waiting for him to be in a pickle
Do you want me to keep going?
That's my guess at least.
It also has a similiar map type screen like ROBOTREK or SUPER MARIO WORLD.

More like a Passion Project to exude the feelings from those games. Like to make those who actually played those games in the past to feel it in this game. Also, you forgot ROBOTREK from your list of inspirations as i see alot of that game in this too.
What about stealing his underpants and wearing them on your head? Yes, that is cannon from chrono trigger.
Usually LARS starts these topics. Of course they usually do it on final fantasy games. I have seen them do it on indie rpgs before too.
For example, one post LARS wrote was about a ethnicity in a final fantasy game. I knew it was troll bait.
