If you love games like Sea of Stars but are really allergic to pixels, there's an easy way around it. Thanks to ShaderGlass, downloadable at this link https://github.com/mausimus/ShaderGlass, you can easily upscale games like this. Here are some examples using the Scalefs-9x shader:

Simple and fast. You can choose from many different shaders, basically all of Retroarch's, to get different effects, for example the classic crt look.
If, on the other hand, you prefer raw pixel art, well, enjoy the game as it is. But it's always nice to have more options to please everyone.

I uh... whatever floats your boat.
I'm using a reshade port of CRT Lottes, basically an HD CRT look. Enhances the pixel art instead.

This dude made a guide

these filters are terrible..

It reminds me of the gameboy emulator upscaling feature. It doesn't look bad, but no thanks, i prefer my pixels.

I suppose some people who never played pixel art or retro games might prefer such an "upscaling" option but to me it just makes the game look bland and without a soul. Like some art project by a student that does not want to be an artist.
I understand the appeal of "removing" the pixels from pixel art, but this is not the way to go. Give it some time and you'll likely find much, much better filters to give a much better effect.

This tbh.

It just seems to put an extreme blur on all the edges and makes it look awful. You can literally see detail being lost in the backgrounds.

Those filters are objectively awful

Honestly when playing pixel art games, I'm all for a subtle approach.
Something enough to blend adjacent pixels and give a soft touch, reminding good ol' crt times.

Almost like a mobile game or something

Damn, way to ruin the point of the game. Looks awful.

Alternatively, try having good taste.

I grew up playing SNES and pixelated games and as much as i love them, i hate pixels.
I m gonna try this ScaleFX 9X in another games. Great tool to have!
The most important thing is that we can all enjoy these games the way we like.
Thank you OP.

I know pixel art doesn't appeal to everybody, but it's hard for me to understand thinking that smearing vaseline across the screen or just adding heavy scanlines looks good.

If you really need a filter, I'd recommend using CRT Royale with Reshade, since it's designed to actually replicate how CRTs render images, but this game's sprites weren't really designed with a CRT in mind.

There is no need to install the program, it is a simple executable. Once opened go to Shader>Choose and select the shader you prefer. Then just click Shift+Ctrl+G to extend the shader to the full screen. The only precaution is to select the right parameter in Input>Pixel Size. For example, if you use the Scalefx-9x on a 1080p monitor, set the Pixel Size parameter as x3, on a 4K monitor instead select x6. You can also save the profile in Proessing>Save profile as. There are many shaders to choose from, all those of Retroarch, but it is not possible to combine them together (while it is possible to do in Retroarch). Another solution would be to use Reshade, but in that case, despite the many filters available, there is no Scalefx.
