I agree the story is a bit mediocre, and it's such a shame that the open world is all one type of environment when Halo rings have beaches, deserts, snowy tundras, islands, decaying ruins like on Delta Halo - so many possible environments.
Most FPS titles do this, really.
The problem I have with Infinite is that being open world and having only a single biome (they originally planned to have more btw,) and only two real interior design themes (Forerunner and Banished,) causes it to feel much more repetitive to me than the more curated, carefully crafted series of levels that past games had.
In previous Halo games, every mission had a specific story-based goal, and was visually and tonally distinguished from other missions in the game. When I say, "Silent Cartographer," "343 Guilty Spark," "Library," "The Arbiter," "High Charity," "The Storm," "The Ark," etc. very specific, even iconic, memories come to mind.
"Oh, that's the level where we stormed the beach and Hunters were first introduced." "Oh that's that creepy, foggy level in a rainy jungle area where the Flood were first introduced with tons of build up and tension." "That's that damn annoying level where I fight the flood through endless hallways." "That's the first level we play as Arby in!" "That's that level in the Covenant world with all the Brutes." "That's that insane level early in Halo 3 where we take down the Scarab in a much more satisfying set piece battle than Halo 2 gave us, finally fulfilling the tantalizing promise of that game." "Oh that's that desert level where we snipe hunters initially then later we drive a scorpion and fight Scarabs in."
Halo Infinite is a single biome that looks the same everywhere I go, and has me doing essentially the same things and fighting more or less the same enemies in the same looking levels, other than bosses and some very late game exceptions. And those bosses are always massive departures from everything else in the game up to that point in terms of how we tackle them, which is less fun than it is just jarring to me. (Not hard. Just jarring. They feel incongruent.)
I say this as someone who actually enjoys most of the game. But it really needs more environmental and thematic variety imo. This game feels like three Halo levels stretched out over, and repeating within, an entire open world game to me. Other than the first one or two, and maybe the final, mission (and the boss' names) I can't for the life of me remember or name a single mission in Infinite or what distinguishes them.
but doom has many other charm that makes it feel good doing "the same". The executions, the variety of weapons, the map design, the music, the fast paced gameplay. I can't remember how I played back in the days the old Halo games, but here I always have to carry a big weapon like Rocket Launcher with me in case of a Hunter appears, so I can only operate with one weapon because the other is always on hold. Oh and dont forget the crappy autosave, that saves in random situations, many times if you die it put you back all the way before the fight started, and in random times it saves in mid-combat, so if you die you dont have to do this all again every time
Damn, you nailed it. I don't have much more to add, save for being concerned about how they will handle the DLC's. The timetable for development, cost, and how they will integrate into the campaign. I hope they are hefty additions that don't end up breaking the bank. If they charge $40 and they end up being bare bones I'll lose all faith in this game and 343. $30 and a chunky amount of content and I'll be satisfied.
I enjoyed Halo 4's campaign a lot more, it was varied, it had some actual pacing, it had great set pieces, it switched up the enemies. Halo Infinite is literally the same every time, snipers on the hills or high places inside, same mix of enemies scattered around in yet another similar arena. My kid asked me at one point why I was fighting in the same room all the time...
Still, I did enjoy it for the short time it lasted. Again thanks to the grapple hook letting me explore places. (Although invisible walls, return to the battefield counter, grapple hook failing on purpose and instant death for swinging an inch too low did their best to dampen the exploration joy) One place in the Repository lets you wander off quite a bit, and that remains the highlight of the game for me :/

yea, halo 4 was a good game, funny how 343 could do that at that time and now they can't make any better with years of development and 500 million bucks spent ...
Lmao then why the ♥♥♥♥ did you buy it?
This whole post reeks of foolishness and whiny
Halo 4 was quite good. But enemies were meat shields, awkard areas, and overabundance and grinding. The plot was excellent, and better than halo infinite but overrall I enjoyed halo infinite moah. I also attentive kid I guess.
