I managed to track down part of the problem, and likely what FrosyModManager is fixing for some people.
Both Battlefront 2 and Battlefront 1 need to be updated with some symbolic links, likely caused by the change to the EA App from Origin.
When Frosty is applying the needed conversions to run the game for the "first time" (likely what the EA App does too) it eventually fails if the game is set up on an exFAT formatted partition instead of an NTFS one.
Check if the disk which houses the game's installation is partitioned as exFAT, and if yes consider moving the installation to an NTFS one (possibly temporarily, for the initial file modifications to be applied once).
After moving the game to an NTFS disk, grabbing the latest Frosty Mon Manager (6.2 did not work), disabling my VPN, after logging into steam and EA Desktop, and running the game through Frosty 6.3 it ran...
