I can spend hours moving around and launching myself into the air to move smoothly between the little platforms, and doing wild combos in the process.
the plot is simple, but the character writing is for me 10/10, and I dont get tired of it.
cyberspace is meh, that's true, the game is also very very janky, the pop-in is terrible...
believe me, I like this game and I enjoy it very much, but I totally see why people dislike it, you are not the minority tho
I would have liked it if it wasn't for its poorly and disgustingly created final horizon "update", which is its undoing both for the reasons you mentioned and for its unfairly unforgiving difficulty spike which makes said final "update" unreasonable. And its "patch" 1.41 doesn't make anything better, for this reason new serious patches are always demanded to sega and sonic team...
It's also weird having everyone sound slightly different than they used to, but for the most part I'm enjoying the game.
I buy that it probably makes the game better, but the game shouldn't have to be altered in order to make it fun. I wish SEGA would get it right themselves. I have high hopes for Sonic X Shadow generations though, the Shadow levels seem fantastic, and more like what I would have wanted in this game.
After the extreme mess the japanesiot sega and sonic team did with the infamous final horizon and superstars... no hopes at all are to be put for sonic & shadow generations.
1. The Open Zone gameplay is pretty fun and great for combat experimentation, the skill tree is definitely a step in the right direction for the Sonic games (as is the better writing). Now, Sonic can not only hup on enemies and destroy them by jumping on or dashing into them, he has gained a versatility similar to Sonic Battle and has definitely stepped up a big notch in the character development.
2. The characters in this game are not as stereotypical as in the late 2010 decade titlles. Just from the looks of it through walkthrough, they actually have more depth to them compared to that last decade slop. Even though I only started actually playing the game a few days ago, I'm already proud of the effort the developers put in the game compared to last decade titles. Even Amy Rose who I used to loathe after the more acceptable side of 2010 decade and prior to Frontiers, is actually much more developed and fleshed out than the stereotypical "Marry me Sonic, marry me now" kind of girl. I just started, so I still have to go through the story and see for myself to concrete this point, but it still counts.
3. The Open Zone enemies in this game... well, I'm not gonna spoil it since it isn't the same character development that the protagonists/antagonists have in this game and I have to learn them all before I describe them. For one, though, experiencing the Pizza Tower of a combo on the Shell enemies while blocking and parrying their baited attacks during a flurry of Sonic's own is a lot of fun. I still have a lot to learn here before I can state the overall experience in a better shape.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game thus far, having a great start with it being my first Sonic licence. The only problems I have are Denvuo (curse that if it isn't removed eventually, it's the disaster to licence that encourages repacking (which can be right if it's done right -for example, for try-outs and games that are out of the sales) and having to pay a 1000+ rouble commission on top of 3250 roubles for a key just play this gem of a game because it's locked in Russia and I had to resort to a digital key site. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the experience of this game, even in its beginnings.
Completely ruined by the worst "dlc" (to taxively be called UPDATE) ever created because of the value it takes off from the game.
That said, your lack of found appeal in the alternative story is your opinion and I respect it fully.
Nothing of this makes sense and it is NOT a mere opinion the final horizon ruined the whole sonic frontiers game, especially in terms of gameplay. Also, lack of found appeal a big bottom.
