Only kinda.
I'd say it's much closer to Ubisoft open world titles.

The main difference is in the map.

In BOTW events and landmarks on the map would only show up after you actually found them, even after unlocking the tower to reveal the map terrain.

In most Ubisoft games of this style, the map gets filled with "points of interest" for you to go check out.
Once you reveal part of the map by solving some puzzle, you'll see more things to go do.

Granted, you can absolutely still discover these events on your own, as you explore parts of the map you haven't revealed yet.

But the difference is still there.
BOTW is "find stuff to do" while Ubisoft is "here's stuff to do".
It's subtle but it changes how you approach wandering around the map.

feels more like a glorified 3D collectathon if anything imo

Well, botw was trying to be an open world game and failed miserably, so in that sense, yes, it is like botw.

No, its more like Skyrim or Oblivion. One Island is kinda like Morrowind.

Yeah it takes a lot of things from BOTW but its not nearly as good.

Do you expect me to take this post seriously? I'm looking for valid thoughts, not jaded opinions of blind haters.
Just telling you how it is, that literally is my valid thoughts.

Yeah that's kinda what I wanted to know. I will wait for a few patches and a sale I think, thanks.

It is the best 3D Sonic game since SA2 though.

No, this is actually good.

You mean BotW wasn't good?
It and Elden Ring were literally some of the best open world games to release in a very long time and was a refreshing take on an otherwise incredibly stagnated genre.

BotW is one of the most overrated games of all time.
Unless you're a fan of a mostly empty open world.

BotW uses the same 'Ubisoft tower' mechanics that other open world games do and it gets praised as the second coming of open world Jesus.

It's not a bad game but I'd just rather play other Zelda games like OoT or TP with better dungeons.

Anyway, I'd say Frontiers takes more from Genshin with its open world puzzles.
Ackranome Nov 9, 2022 @ 11:02pm
No.
Mryoyo123 Nov 9, 2022 @ 11:14pm
nah, this is pretty much super sonic odyssey, sure the art direction is heavily inspired by BoTW but gameplay-wise it's more like super mario odyssey

Hard agree. So good to see some people with some actual taste here. Botw is legitimately an overrated mediocre open-world game. Probably one of the worst zelda games as well. I hope the sequel will actually be good and fix the issues that made botw pointless and uninteresting to explore, because I do itch for a new zelda: there just hasn’t been a good zelda in a long while.

You want to know what made BotW such an interesting open world game to experience?
Unlike so many other open world games today, it doesn't ever hold your hand; rather, the game actually expects you to explore the world on your own, making your own discoveries and experience your own adventure, which is kind of the whole point of an open world game.

So many open world games use linear progression and quest markers that tell you exactly where to go, but BotW has none of that. Even the "Ubisoft Towers" are actually fun to climb and make for an interesting challenge in some cases, unlike actual Ubisoft Towers that start getting dull after the first few or so. Players can fight the final boss whenever they want instead of being forced to complete all the story quests like in almost every other open world game.

The only other open world game I can think of that offers this much freedom and player choice is Elden Ring. :SonicManiaGoldRing:
