The stages are often so large, mainly due to the speed Sonic travels at, that the levels are never loaded in their entirety, but rather small chunks of the level are loaded as you play and progressing through the level unloads earlier sections that aren't needed anymore as new areas are loaded in.
Open world games often work the same way due to hardware limitations, but Sonic has been using this trick since Shadow the Hedgehog despite the games using linear levels. In fact, it's the same trick that the PS1 Crash Bandicoot games are well known for.
Not really for some games have demo that gives you a rough idea what to expect. I don't rely on game-play trailer for it can be rig to entice the player to buy bad game.
Which is too much.
No it's not. In inflation-adjusted terms games are considerably cheaper than they used to be despite skyrocketing production costs.
Heck, with the state of the AAA gaming industry over the past decade or so, most of them aren't even worth a single dollar, and no, that's not an exaggeration.
True, that's why I don't waste my money on them.
So many great indie titles have come out lately and have basically succeeded in all the ways the AAA industry fail at nowadays.
I still irk at how Sonic Forces at release was SO expensive and game was like 1 hour long.
All for the cost of 0$ only!
