Ichiban is 10 times better than Kiryu. Finally some personality into a character.

I played every Yakuza game that came out and I have to say that they finally wrote a character that has a personality and finally captured my kind of sense of humor. Granted the sense of humor from different countries and even different people can be relative but im sure a lot of you guys have to admit the writing for this game is so much better now. At first I wasn't sure if I want a new character for the Yakuza franchise. I played the spin off game Judgement and even though it was a good game, the character seems a little flat also. Ichiban to me though dumb as rocks have such great personality that I fell in love with the character a few hours in. And the deeper you go into the game and his interaction with his friends made the character even more likable. Kiryu on the other hand has a personality of a log. Like i said I played every yakuza game and still not sure about the main character. For me to like a side character of Majima more than Kiryu is a detremant for Kiryu. But Majima to me is a little too crazy for my liking. Finally a character with balanced in terms of not taking himself too seriously and not go bad ish crazy like Majima. Do you agree that they finally got it right with the main character of Ichiban Kasuga?

He’s cool, better is subjective he’s essentially a dorky version of kiryu. As both stand up for injustice and have a heart of gold. Ichiban is just more expressive.

I like the change. I got tired of Kiryu's stone-cold Kenshiro vibe after two games.

The previous Yakuza games with Kiryu is still timeless because it his character is a mature-perspective where you're looking at the conflict as an outsider, an adoptive father, and friend/sworn brother that tries to look at bigger pictures but still prioritize personal goals. I found the comments at the end of Yakuza 6 really painted this clear with Majima's comment "Kiryu-chan is always thinking 10 steps ahead".

But I liked the change of pace of this game too with Ichiban because sometimes life is good when you're just in the moment and only thinking about the next-step ahead and only thinking about the things in front of you. It's why Ichiban's antics and personality sticks to us so well. We all know the thrill of just going with guts.

I'd say the Studio nailed the reboot with Ichiban successfully, while still allowing for the previous games to stand on its own.

I agree.

I think Kiryu's appeal only shines in the original, Kiwami, and in 0, because it's still within the context of his relationship with Nishiki. So there's a very emotional arc there, and his stoic way of behaving, like a man who carries the weight of the world, works incredibly well.

But in every other game, most of the characters introduced outshine Kiryu by a lot. Even in 0 he was obfuscated by Majima's powerful presence, and Kuze, Awano and Shibusawa.
Ichiban engages more with the world around him and feels like a part of it. With Kiryu from the second game onwards, I just felt like he was a pair of eyes that the series relied on.

Kiryu and Majima are spirit of this game, 1v1 bears, solo 100 people etc, ichiban is childs play compared to them, hes ok but they need to keep working if they want to bring him on the same level.

turn based party combat also doesnt capture him well. In yakuza 0 when you invested fully in all styles and go around wrecking everything in your path, thats some fun, seven is good game, but i wouldnt go as far as say ichiban even x2 better let alone x10 lol.

I would not say Kasuga is better because he only appear in 1 game while Kiryu has 6 games dedicated to him which made him better developed

but i agree Kasuga has more potential than Kiryu. in his first appearance in the og yakuza back in 2005 Kiryu isn't that much interesting tbh compared to Kasuga first appearance in 7
