How to increase Song Quality
Hello. New to this game, and trying to figure out how to improve my song quality. Currently, I cannot combine puzzle pieces to get a quality higher than 10 in any one section. Are there particular skills for the band I need to raise to be able to get puzzle pieces combined above 10?

I'm also noticing that, I have NEVER been able to get a Melody puzzle piece to 10. Almost every time I combine pieces, I'm lucky if ANY Melody pieces are even able to be combined.

Any tips here?

Song quality is based completely on the Music writing skill of band members (Rhythm, Melody, Riff) or Lyric Writing skill (Lyric), Every band member contributes to the puzzle pool based on their own skill level. As their skills go up, the quality of puzzle parts increase. Occasionally, two pieces by the same member with the same value can be combined to increase the value.

You might want to read the Johnny B Goode chapter in my guide as I shamelessly plug it as a way to learn the game.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the guide.

What can you tell me about Practice, because as a new player I find that as another big shortcoming? Early in one game, I had to sell my house because one screen told me my record contract wanted song quality above 20, and mentioned nothing about recording quality. If I didn't sell my house, I would have not been able to record my last track to right level and break contract.

This lead me to find that, without a house, you cannot practice. This kind of stinks, especially when you are on the road and doing a tour, playing every night. Longer you go without playing/practicing songs, they lose play quality. It would be nice if I could rent a practice space on an off day, so that maybe after a few off days, I could work some new songs into a set, rather than playing the same 9 songs for 40+ shows of a tour.

So...practice, anywhere else to practice besides a house?

The house is your only option for practicing.

Practicing goes up as you gain experience at playing. Busking will earn you a free 20 skill points in Playing, as long as you save exp for other things until after you hit 20.

If your contract demanded 20 quality songs with no particular minimum recording quality, you do not need to put more than an hour into each recording. I have never had a contract that did not demand a minimum song and recording quality, but I never even sign a first contract until I have enough material recorded to record the first album immediately.

My guide is certainly not the end-all/be-all for the game, but it will clarify a lot of misconceptions and help a lot.

Thank you. Appreciate the help and answers. Will definitely take a look through the guide to see if there is anything I am missing.
For the first album I found that you can make enough busking to easily finance it at the 20 quality level required. I think the tendency is to stop busking once one starts getting gigs, but until you're getting gigs paying more for your Friday and Saturday nights than you can make busking for the week it's worth continuing to busk. Also note that you get experience busking, and you need experience until you hit level 50.
