Changes

Camera now locked to the bird's skeleton instead of the other way around for more accurate bird movement.
Move your head up and down to peck at things on the ground while landed.
Reduced unwanted flapping just from moving your head around.
Reduced camera clipping through the environment.
First person beak
Improved visibility in shadows during the day.
Wing position is more realistic, offset based on the bird's spine instead of directly matching your IRL. hand position.
Menus take you out of the bird
Higher density forest with more sane placement of foliage around open clearings.
More ruins
New models for trees, ruins, rocks, etc
Auto-detect graphics settings are more accurate.
Landing/takeoff physics improved.
Roomscale movement and turning improved.
Misc flight physics tweaks
Weather probability tweaks
Updated to UE 5.4 for nanite performance improvements and XR fixes.

How to opt into the Beta

In your Library:
Right click You Are A Bird
Click Properties
Click Betas
Choose beta from the Beta Participation dropdown
Close Properties
Wait for the update to complete.

If the Beta is not working on your PC yet, just set Beta Participation back to None to play the old version.

Any plans to add any of this stuff? My GF is very interested in this game genre but I have too many other projects. - Cities / Towns / Rural areas? - People to defecate on? (OK that question is from me not her

) - Perches? So one could build a nest and regurgitate into their baby birds faces. - "Socialize" with other birds? / Communication w/ bird sounds / songs. - The ability to change bird species? Various species would have different traits: (what they hunt (fish, vermin, lizards, snakes,...

Changes

Catch rabbits with your claws and carry them away. Can't eat them yet.
Control your claws with left grip and right grip.
Fast forward time from the pop-up menu.
More dynamic wing physics and animation
Bird's head moves with your IRL head.
You can ride the deer.
Better visibility in darkness.
Sky & lighting tweaks
Weather change frequency and probability tweaks.
Less flickering from cloud shadows during main menu timelapse
Animal NPC navigation improved.
Better UI visibility in all lighting conditions
Fixed floating grass.
Landing physics improved.

I spent the past 100,000,000 years remaking YAaB in Unreal Engine 5 and you can try it ~right now~

Beta features

Expect bugs and performance issues at this stage.

Calibration eliminated!
Better wing controls: roll naturally with your wrist instead of triggers
Temporal Super Resolution - save on FPS by turning down render resolution without much visual quality loss
Better lighting with extremely long distance shadows
Better day/night sky graphics
High quality volumetric clouds you can fly through and above
Dynamic weather system with rain, thunder, lightning, fog, and cloud coverage
Weather clears above the cloud layer
Better flight physics
Proper graphics options
Little tutorial guys
Returning to massive finite landscapes with more human touch in their design.
Infinite procedural generated landscapes are being removed because they are too much of a performance burden and not reliable with some of the new landscape features like rivers, waterfalls, and mountain lakes that I'm working on.
Better grass
Better groundcover
Better ambient audio
Fast-forward time from the popup menu
Better landscape detail
OpenXR instead of the older SteamVR/Oculus targets
