Game does not even start

I cannot even get the game to start, I had it already, but after system replacements it now does not work, I assume Windows 10 and DS1 don't get along.

Anyway I bought it cheap through Steam and it won't even start. I get an error message saying that Windows is looking for a solution and told to close program. I also get a message saying that Windows has been notified and if there is a solution I will be told. Is there a quicker way of fixing this issue than waiting for Windows to maybe or maybe not get back to me?

I last played this 2 years ago on my pc now it tries to start but keeps kicking me out. I've tried updating the tages drivers that it claims is not downloading from disc. I have windows 7 but on the kids pc its windows 10 and I got it to work on that somehow.

Thanks for the hope. I have tried the DVD and the steam version both have not worked for me. Will try other things then.

Uninstall it, remove setting files if they remain behind and reinstall.
If that fails, try a clean boot. It usually helps me when there is a driver error or software conflict, which is not always as easy to spot.

I have this problem with freelancer and win 10 but dark star one works perfectly.

I right clicked on properties for the steam icon and it has allowed another game (Meridian) to work for me as well as Skyrim. Skyrim worked before windows 10 was installed.

First make sure your system and software are up to date... Then verify the game files...
So I found a few things that worked for me. In the past I had to ADD the game EXE to Data Execution Prevention , under system properties, advanced, Performance settings, Then Data Execution Prevention.
If you have played the game before or still check here C:\Users\YOUR NAME OR USER NAME\Documents\Ascaron Entertainment\Darkstar One
if you want to keep saves, I moved them and deleted the folder Darkstar One.
try to start the game...
I had to delete iphlpapi.dll from the game folder.

I know this thread is really old, but I just got the game and it wouldn't run in Windows 10 Home 64. I hope people who are having trouble find this and that it helps. I was getting an error message from Ascaron and dug into it a bit. The solution here about deleting the iphlpapi.dll file is not relevant for this OS, but I fixed the problem by allowing the Darkstar One.exe to have controlled folder access.

Apparently it needs access to My Documents, probably to save games states. Most modern apps have little problem with this, but there is a feature of Windows Defender that denies access to folders by default and you have to explicitly allow "Controlled Folder Access". Just search for that in settings and then choose "Add an allowed app", point to the Darkstar One.exe in the installed folder.

This worked for me and the game runs and saves now.

I am on win 10 home with an RTX Geforce 2070 graphics card and a 28 inch ASUS 4K monitor. It runs great on mine but had severe res problems when upgraded. I was getting black screens. So went into game options and unticked FSAA. Then I was able to try all resolutions in game. Best came out as 2560x 1440.

Works fine for me you may depending on what AV you are using tell it to allow for game to change files and set game to run as administrator. If folks need help you can usually find Sarath#6636 in his discord server. Personally; I am trying to find a way to make this multiplayer friendly.

I had same problem and just solved it.
Find DarkStarOne.exe. Run compatibility diagnostics. Run Win 7 compatibility mode. While diagnostics I also check marked several boxes, donno if that is necessary or not. Also you probably need to run it with admin rights. Now it works.
And I really think drivers state is not the case here.
