If that fails, try a clean boot. It usually helps me when there is a driver error or software conflict, which is not always as easy to spot.
So I found a few things that worked for me. In the past I had to ADD the game EXE to Data Execution Prevention , under system properties, advanced, Performance settings, Then Data Execution Prevention.
If you have played the game before or still check here C:\Users\YOUR NAME OR USER NAME\Documents\Ascaron Entertainment\Darkstar One
if you want to keep saves, I moved them and deleted the folder Darkstar One.
try to start the game...
I had to delete iphlpapi.dll from the game folder.

Apparently it needs access to My Documents, probably to save games states. Most modern apps have little problem with this, but there is a feature of Windows Defender that denies access to folders by default and you have to explicitly allow "Controlled Folder Access". Just search for that in settings and then choose "Add an allowed app", point to the Darkstar One.exe in the installed folder.
This worked for me and the game runs and saves now.
Find DarkStarOne.exe. Run compatibility diagnostics. Run Win 7 compatibility mode. While diagnostics I also check marked several boxes, donno if that is necessary or not. Also you probably need to run it with admin rights. Now it works.
And I really think drivers state is not the case here.
