I mean, customization isn't exactly that rare of a thing in games, so I don't get it.
I do think they can be funny, but it depends on context.
But this doesn't seem funny to me at all. Like - "haha gay sex" isn't really a joke to anyone who is older than the age of 12, and while I know many people of that age play these kinds of games (I was playing them myself when I was that young), it's still weird to see it overwhelm reviews and such to the point of drowning out legitimate reviews.
So I figured there must be a cause for the meme, if someone could explain it.
Either way if you try to actually discuss the game to those people the answers are usually ignorant because they probably don't even play it or have a vision where only what they want matters.
Doom unfortunately has a similar issue where everyone knows the memes but knows literally nothing about the games themsleves which kind of became a problem when Eternal asked players to use their brain.
Probably both since that particular meme stems from a secret level character named Mirage. So, of course people have to meme the hell out a "waifu!" in the game. Which kinda ticks me off since the whole philosophical debate that is had in the level was great and the takeaway should have been uplifting to people etc.
So, yeah.... 'course the body pillow merchandise doesn't help anything lol.
I see. That would make some sense, but that doesn't explain why it's so common for this game rather than for other games.
I remember back when there was controversy over the "Hot Coffee" scandal for Grand Theft Auto games back around 2004 or 2005. Which all in all was hidden content not even available to players really - but still lead to legislative action and outroar.
So seeing people make joke "add sex" requests to stuff nowadays just seems really quaint.
Like, we're on Steam - it isn't like games with sex are hard to find.
There was also a big uptick in those memes after the custom weapon colours were added because the tweet announcing that feature showed colour schemes based on pride flags (a trans revolver, bi shotgun and pan sawblade launcher iirc), the trans revolver in particular seems to have become rlly popular with a lot of fanart and vids using it.
EDIT: tweet I was referring to, I remembered right https://twitter.com/ULTRAKILLGame/status/1533127346328203264
I see. I guess if developers are retweeting memes and such then it makes sense that those memes would then spread to a huge percentage of reviews.
Personally I have absolutely zero interest in the personal sexual interests (or personal gender identity) of the developers of literally any video game ever made, but more power to them.
