Do we kill prime souls or do they kill themselves?

So if I understand the lore right, Prime souls are manifestations of pure will power that have so much said power they don't need a husk to exist.

If so, then are we really hurting them or killing them? Is V1 just roasting them through violence to hurt their feelings? I mean, when we beat them, we don't deal the actual killing blow. They just sort of give up and burst into pieces afterwords, which gives me the impression that as long as a prime soul is determined enough they can't be stopped.

What do you all think?
